Building Inspector
About The Position
The Building Inspector position in the Community Development Department ensures that permitted construction, both commercial and residential, adheres to code and municipal policy. This role involves tracking and updating plans based on field observations and performing plan reviews as assigned. The position is responsible for scheduling and conducting timely inspections of various construction elements, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and regulations, and maintaining accurate records within departmental software. The Building Inspector also answers questions, discusses issues with owners and contractors, and may assist the Chief Building Official with complex cases. Training and overseeing the work of others, along with performing administrative functions, are also part of the role.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Six (6) years of journey level work experience in one or more construction trades
- Possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license
- Pass a pre-employment drug test
- Must possess a Building Inspector certification within twelve (12) months of hire
- Knowledge of federal, state, and City of Prescott rules, regulations, policies, procedures, codes, and ordinances related to building codes and enforcement.
- Knowledge of construction methods and materials.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of skilled trades related to building construction, maintenance, repair, and renovation.
- Skill in communicating in writing for administrative and technical purposes.
- Skill in communicating verbally in both one-on-one and group situations.
- Skill in utilizing established Department software programs for the processing of inspection and plan review elements of Community Development applications.
- Skill in using public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
- Ability to safely inspect buildings.
- Ability to follow and enforce building code regulations.
- Ability to tactfully provide technical expertise related to non-compliance with building codes.
- Ability to read and follow blueprints, as-built drawings, and engineering drawings.

Responsibilities
- Schedules timely inspections of construction.
- Performs field inspections of wiring, plumbing, foundations, structural integrity, and gas installations, constructions, or repairs according to permits and licenses issued.
- Records/logs inspections with notes regarding compliance/non-compliance in each area.
- Ensures licenses and permits are issued for all projects inspected; ensures conformance with all codes and building regulations.
- Performs field inspections to commercial and residential construction blueprints, drawings, plans, and specifications for compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes; coordinates with other City units including the Fire Department to ensure construction is per plans reviewed for compliance with fire, zoning, and other building codes.
- Retrieves, utilizes, inputs, and manages inspection data within the permitting/inspection/plan review modules of established Department software.
- Answers questions about inspections; discusses issues/problems that arise with owners/contractors.
- Assists the Chief Building Official in performing inspections of structures that may be structurally compromised and other open cases proceeding through the building safety code violation process, as directed.
- Trains and oversees work of others as assigned; reviews daily work accomplishments.
- Performs various administrative functions as well.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
