About The Position

Join the City of Gresham as a Building Inspector Trainee, an entry-level role where you’ll learn to perform residential building inspections across all disciplines while working toward State of Oregon inspector certifications. This full-time role includes Oregon PERS retirement and full medical, dental, and vision benefits. Requirements

  • Up to one year of vocational and/or technical training in building construction, plus up to one year of experience in one or more areas of building construction — or any combination of two to three years of related education, training, and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Oregon Residential Structural Inspector (CAS) certification (or equivalent) required at hire
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) within 30 days of hire
  • Oregon Residential Plans Examiner (CAX) certification (or equivalent) within 12 months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Train in the residential building inspector role, working alongside experienced staff to learn construction codes and compliance
  • Learn to inspect residential buildings and accessory structures across structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical disciplines
  • Assist with field inspections and observe on-site plan review and code interpretation
  • Study and prepare for State of Oregon inspector certification examinations
  • Learn to notify contractors and homeowners of violations and follow up to confirm corrections
  • Learn to organize, prepare, and maintain inspection records and follow-up activities
  • Prepare documentation under guidance, coordinate with other departments, and participate in code training
  • Progressively take on inspection responsibilities as certifications are earned, with the goal of working independently
