About The Position

The City of Huntsville’s Inspection Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill Building Inspector I & II position(s). The Inspection Department enforces building codes and issues building permits for the City of Huntsville. Our goal is to provide protection for the health, safety, and welfare of the general public in relation to the use and occupancy of structures by enforcement of adopted Building Codes and to protect the general public from abuse by unlicensed Contractors and sub-contractors by enforcement of Contractor Licensing Laws.

Requirements

  • High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
  • Either Licensed as an Alabama Home Builder, an Alabama General Contractor, or Certified as a Building Inspector through International Code Council.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • A minimum of ten years of building construction experience is required (for Building Inspector II).
  • A minimum of ten years building construction trade experience is required (for Building Inspector II).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in building construction or inspection work (for Building Inspector I).

Responsibilities

  • Conducting inspections of buildings in the course of construction, alterations, and repair to determine whether plans, quality of work, and materials conform with existing code requirements.
  • Leading, providing assistance and advice to building inspectors and in conducting the more difficult and complex inspections.
