Building Envelope Technician

Universal Engineering Sciences•Chantilly, VA

About The Position

The Building Envelope Technician works alongside experienced professionals to evaluate and test building systems that protect structures from water, air, and moisture intrusion. The role involves hands-on inspections and field testing of roofing, waterproofing, exterior walls, windows, curtain walls, and other building components on commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential projects. The technician uses specialized testing equipment and building science technologies, reviews construction documents, and collaborates with project managers, contractors, owners, and other project stakeholders to identify and address construction challenges. The position offers field-based technical training and opportunities to develop expertise in building enclosure performance, construction quality assurance, and consulting services. The work is primarily outdoors at construction and field sites, with moderate travel to jobsites—up to approximately 40% of the time. Field conditions can include rugged or uneven terrain, active construction environments, noise, dust, heat, humidity, sun, and adverse weather. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and use of PPE.

  • OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • Fall protection, aerial lift, scaffold, or confined space training.
  • Experience reading construction plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Exposure to quality assurance, special inspections, construction observation, or materials testing.
  • Knowledge of moisture intrusion, air barriers, water testing, or building science concepts.
  • Experience performing field testing or using testing equipment on construction projects.
  • Associate degree or technical training in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Architecture, Building Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant industry certifications or manufacturer training related to building enclosure systems, testing, or construction quality.
  • Experience with ASTM or AAMA field testing standards for windows, doors, curtain walls, waterproofing, or air barrier systems.
  • Building enclosure, materials testing, or manufacturer certifications related to construction quality and performance testing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections and quality assurance observations of roofing, waterproofing, air barrier, exterior wall, glazing, window, door, and cladding systems on construction projects.
  • Evaluate installation and performance of building enclosure systems against project plans, specifications, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Conduct and assist with water penetration, air leakage, adhesion, moisture, and other performance testing of exterior building systems.
  • Set up and operate testing equipment used to assess windows, curtain walls, waterproofing systems, air barriers, and other building components.
  • Document field observations, test results, deficiencies, and corrective actions in coordination with project managers, contractors, and construction teams.
  • Review construction drawings, project details, and manufacturer installation requirements to support inspections and testing.
