About The Position

KIPP Atlanta seeks an experienced Building Engineer. This position is under the direct supervision of the Regional Facilities Manager. The Building Engineer is responsible for routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of school facilities and grounds, and requires responsiveness to facilities-related emergencies. This hands-on role supports day-to-day operations by ensuring that building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical remain in good working order, contributing to a safe, functional learning environment for scholars and staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of verifiable maintenance experience in a school, office, or similar setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one core trade: HVAC, plumbing, or electrical.
  • Ability to read and follow basic work orders, safety procedures, and equipment manuals.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Relentless results-orientation.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree preferred
  • Building Automation Systems or Energy Management Systems (BAS/EMS) software proficiency
  • Project Management experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine repairs on building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and lighting.
  • Monitor heating, cooling, and ventilation systems to ensure proper operation.
  • Conduct minor facility repairs such as patching, painting, tightening fixtures, and hardware installation.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of tools, supplies, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ensure that work areas and mechanical rooms are clean, safe, and organized.
  • Support the implementation of school-based work orders and report any larger issues to the Regional Facilities Manager.
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance concerns during regular hours and on-call shifts.
  • Support emergency response for issues such as flooding, system failures, and weather-related damage.
  • Document and communicate emergency responses and resolution status to the Regional Facilities Manager.
  • On-call availability by phone and in-person, after hours, weekends, and holidays, as necessary, to evaluate facility conditions and coordinate emergency responses.
  • Meets regularly with the Director of Operations to identify issues and concerns regarding facilities.
  • Informs and coordinates with the Director of Operations on budget-related communications, as well as scheduling and timing constraints regarding projects and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • Provide updates to the Regional Facilities Manager regarding building conditions and ongoing repairs.
  • Coordinate access and basic support for vendors performing specialized repairs.
