About The Position

The Middle School Secondary Building Engineer is responsible for the daily opening and inspection of the building and its systems, performing general custodial and maintenance duties, operating the building energy management system, and coordinating setups for various school activities. This role also involves performing repairs, maintenance, groundskeeping, and assisting with safety and security procedures to protect district property.

Requirements

High School Graduate.
Valid driver’s license.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds including pushing and pulling items such as tables, desks and cabinets.
Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding up to 30’ high.
Demonstrate ability to use computers, email, online work order system, building automation software and electronic purchasing system.
Ability to use hand tools and power tools proficiently and be prepared to demonstrate this ability.
Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
Be able to apply math concepts such as general math, fractions, percentages, at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
Be able to read and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and cleaning chemical labels.
Be neat in appearance.
Must make every effort to be available for emergency and overtime assignments with proper notice.
Must be willing to attend seminars and in-service training.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
The position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, and the use of ladders to access equipment and work areas.
Employees must be able to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, and around operating mechanical and electrical equipment while following all applicable safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
Must be capable of regularly lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving tools, materials, equipment, and supplies.
The role requires sufficient physical stamina and mobility to perform manual tasks, transport equipment to and from work locations, and safely operate hand and power tools.
Employees must be able to perform repetitive physical activities and maintain awareness of their surroundings while working in active operational environments.

Previous school district, commercial or industrial experience preferred.
College or trade school classes are preferred.

Responsibilities

Open the building daily and inspect all building systems prior to the start of the school day.
Perform general custodial and maintenance duties throughout the facility, including restrooms, offices, hallways, storage areas, electrical rooms, and boiler rooms.
Operate and monitor the building energy management system, including temperature oversight, room scheduling based on occupancy, and necessary environmental adjustments.
Set up and clean up areas used for breakfast, lunch, and other meal service programs.
Coordinate room and equipment setups for assemblies, special events, and school activities conducted during the day.
Perform painting and touch-up work on walls, ceilings, doors, door frames, and trim.
Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recyclable materials.
Perform snow and ice removal, including salting and maintaining safe walkways, entrances, and exterior access points.
Repair and maintain doors, locks, and associated hardware.
Complete minor carpentry work, including drywall patching, ceiling grid repairs, and ceiling tile replacement.
Install and maintain wall-mounted fixtures such as coat racks, marker boards, tack boards, tack strips, pictures, and restroom accessories.
Perform minor plumbing repairs, including maintenance of drinking fountains, faucets, sinks, and toilet fixtures.
Respond to emergency situations involving electrical, water, or gas systems, including locating and operating shutoff controls as needed.
Perform minor electrical maintenance, including replacing outlets, switches, ballasts, and light bulbs, as well as operating circuit breakers and power distribution equipment.
Maintain and care for landscaped areas, including trimming, weeding, mulching, and related groundskeeping activities.
Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, including classroom unit ventilators and related systems.
Receive, stock, organize, and distribute shipments, and assemble furniture and equipment as needed.
Maintain and monitor building clock systems, fire alarm systems, and burglar alarm systems.
Manage building inventory and procure supplies through approved purchasing procedures.
Serve as a liaison and provide access and assistance to vendors, inspectors, and contractors performing work on-site.
Assist the Principal with safety and security procedures, including fire drills, tornado drills, lockdowns, and other emergency preparedness activities.
Coordinate and communicate effectively with custodial staff, administrators, and other district personnel to ensure efficient facility operations.
Protect district property from fire, flood, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized entry.
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance in accordance with district expectations.
