About The Position

The Building Custodian helps maintain clean, safe, functional, and event-ready spaces at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. This position performs routine and specialized custodial work, supports room and facility readiness, completes basic maintenance and repairs, cares for custodial equipment and supplies, and assists with indoor and outdoor facility needs. A flexible schedule is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and varying start and end times based on facility and event schedules.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Knowledge of custodial methods, cleaning products, disinfectants, chemical safety, and proper care of common facility surfaces.
  • Ability to safely use custodial and grounds equipment such as vacuums, carpet extractors, buffers, burnishers, sweepers, auto-scrubbers, pressure washers, snow blowers, and related tools.
  • Basic knowledge of facility maintenance and repair, including painting, patching, minor plumbing, hardware replacement, and equipment assembly.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize routine work, event-related needs, special projects, and unexpected conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while maintaining a professional, service-oriented approach around clients, partners, staff, vendors, and members of the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, safety procedures, product labels, equipment instructions, and facility checklists.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended or irregular hours based on facility and event schedules.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of experience in custodial, janitorial, building maintenance, facilities support, or a related role.
  • Directly related work experience, or a combination of education and work experience, may be substituted one for the other on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read and understand safety information, product labels, equipment instructions, work orders, and facility procedures.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to complete required training and safely operate specialized equipment such as scissor lifts, boom lifts, sweepers, auto-scrubbers, carpet extractors, buffers, burnishers, and snow blowers.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and maintains meeting rooms, event spaces, offices, kitchens, restrooms, common areas, entrances, loading areas, and other indoor and outdoor facility spaces.
  • Performs routine custodial work, including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting, disinfecting, washing walls and windows, cleaning fixtures and furnishings, and removing trash and litter.
  • Cleans, disinfects, inspects, and restocks restrooms and other public areas to support daily operations and scheduled events.
  • Performs hard-floor and carpet care using appropriate methods and equipment, including scrubbing, buffing, burnishing, stripping, refinishing, shampooing, and extraction.
  • Monitors facility cleanliness and safety throughout the workday and respond to spills, waste, restroom needs, weather impacts, and other custodial concerns in a timely manner.
  • Supports event and program readiness by completing assigned room preparation, moving and arranging tables, chairs, furnishings, gallery materials, equipment, and supplies, and assisting with teardown and reset when needed.
  • Uses, cleans, inspects, and stores custodial tools, machines, chemicals, and supplies according to manufacturer instructions, safety requirements, and established procedures.
  • Maintains custodial supply levels, restocks consumable products, identifies ordering needs, and helps keep custodial and storage areas clean, organized, and secure.
  • Performs basic maintenance and repairs, including patching and painting, replacing minor hardware, addressing minor leaks, assembling equipment, and completing other approved facility upkeep.
  • Monitors building, equipment, fixtures, and furnishings for damage or maintenance needs and promptly reports conditions requiring specialized repair or additional support.
  • Performs assigned exterior and seasonal work, including litter removal, plant care, weeding, walkway maintenance, and snow and ice removal.
  • Assists with opening and securing the facility, including checking assigned areas, locking doors and windows, turning off equipment or lights as directed, and setting alarms according to established procedures.
  • Coordinates with Events Coordinators, Events Supervisors, Event Staff, vendors, contractors, and City teams to support facility readiness while minimizing disruption to events, programs, clients, and the public.
  • Follows safety procedures, participates in required meetings and training, assists other divisions with approved facility or event-support needs, and performs other related duties as assigned.
