About The Position

Under the direction of the Senior Custodian, the Building Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety, and maintenance of the assigned facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment. This role involves opening and closing school buildings, performing custodial cleaning, monitoring bathrooms, handling bodily fluid spills according to Universal Precautions, unclogging plumbing, maintaining and repairing flooring, fixtures, and furniture, setting up for events, removing snow and ice, and performing daily checks of mechanical spaces. The custodian also replaces lightbulbs and ceiling tiles, changes classroom air filters, utilizes AHERA reports, and may operate lawn maintenance equipment. They are responsible for responding to security and fire alarms, carrying a radio for communication, and completing work orders and assignments issued by Senior Custodians. The position ensures building-wide cleaning operations are carried out and informs the Senior Custodian of needed supplies. The role may also involve other custodial duties as required to meet the needs of the school district.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn the use of tools, techniques, equipment, and procedures required in the care of municipal school buildings.
  • Ability to take direction, be self-motivated, and perform multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff.
  • Successful completion of NCBC (fingerprinting) and CORI prior to start of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for opening and closing of school and associated buildings, including unlocking/locking doors, turning off/on alarms, raising/lowering flags, operating lighting, and conducting opening walkthroughs to ensure building safety and functionality.
  • Performs custodial cleaning of an assigned route and assists in general cleaning throughout the school as directed.
  • Performs cleaning and monitors bathrooms throughout the day to ensure health and safety standards are upheld.
  • Follows Universal Precautions and sanitation procedures when handling the cleanup of bodily fluid spills.
  • Unclogs plumbing and waste traps (toilets, urinals, and sinks) as needed.
  • Performs restoration and maintenance of flooring.
  • Maintains custodial equipment and reports broken equipment to the Senior Custodian.
  • Maintains and may make minor repairs to school fixtures and furniture.
  • Moves and assembles furniture within the assigned building.
  • Sets up and breaks down for games, events, and meetings.
  • Assists in the removal of snow and ice by operating snow blowers, shovels, and spreaders for the clearing of walkways and stairs.
  • Maintains communication with the Senior Custodian and submits issues for work order submission.
  • Completes building-based work orders and assignments issued by the Senior Custodians.
  • Ensures building-wide cleaning operations are carried out.
  • Informs Senior Custodian of needed custodial supplies.
  • Performs daily checks of all mechanical spaces, sprinkler control rooms, and boiler rooms within the assigned area and reports any unusual conditions.
  • Takes immediate reasonable action (if safe to do so) to control and limit damage by fire or flood.
  • Replaces needed lightbulbs and removes/replaces non-asbestos ceiling tiles.
  • Replaces classroom air filters as directed.
  • Attends and completes department-required training.
  • May be required to operate lawn mowers, string trimmers, and hedge trimmers to maintain building appearances.
  • Responds to security and fire alarm calls appropriately.
  • Carries a radio while on duty for communication within the building.
  • May be directed to perform other custodial duties as required to meet the needs of the school district.
