About The Position

This position is open to current City of Milwaukee employees only. The Building Code Enforcement Manager-Commercial directs the daily operations of the Commercial Code Enforcement Division, including inspections, complaint response, enforcement action, and compliance.

Requirements

  • Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position, or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed-term position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, architecture or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience in construction, environmental code enforcement or commercial fire code enforcement, including one year of experience as a team or project leader.
  • Valid Driver's License at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Certification as a commercial building code inspector through the state of Wisconsin at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Certification as a Fire Inspector II through the International Code Council (ICC) or above at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Certification as a State of Wisconsin Asbestos Supervisor within one year of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Certification as a Fire Plans Examiner (F3) through the ICC within one year of appointment and throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain inspection and enforcement policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Establish programmatic goals, objectives, and performance measures for the division to ensure consistent and equitable application of municipal codes.
  • Determine and request resources through the annual budget process; control resources appropriately.
  • Evaluate enforcement and compliance data, prepare statistical reports, and recommend operational improvements and enforcement priorities.
  • Prepare written and statistical reports on programmatic accomplishments.
  • Coordinate supervision of staff and delegation of responsibilities related to investigation, enforcement, licensing, and permitting activities performed by commercial building inspectors, environmental risk officers, and support staff.
  • Develop and maintain staff development plans, conduct performance reviews, address gaps and deficiencies, implement performance improvement plans, and disciplinary measures as required.
  • Coordinate DNS representation at Circuit Court, Municipal Court, and other City regulatory boards and commissions; serve as the Commissioner’s representative at various appeal hearings.
