About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Building Automation & Operations, the incumbent is primarily responsible for developing and updating BAS surveillance schedules and objectives, tracking & reporting on BAS surveillance performance. Work with the Senior Manager and the Building Operations teams to develop an alarm management strategy and reporting. Directs Analysts in the review and interpretation of BAS data and trends related to HVAC control issues. Provide BAS subject matter technical expertise on BAS controls, devices and control sequences when working with Building Operations teams and control technicians in troubleshooting, identifying and making recommendations to the Senior Manager and when directed implement control revisions required to resolve system deficiencies. Primarily responsible and accountable for Building Automation Systems (BAS) Control Room operations and the BAS setup qualifications. Provides input and assists in technical consultation, building operations management direction, building automation site standards, including design, installation and commissioning. The incumbent will also participate in or perform reviews of building automation and control system design, documents, construction and participate in commissioning functions on new or renovation construction projects managed by other University of Toronto departments. In accordance to Professional Engineering of Ontario rules and regulations as well as the Utilities and Operations general policy for department involvement in the review of construction projects. Ensures automated equipment safety management, and automated occupancy safety systems are monitored, and notifications and alerts are properly dispatched following Standard Operating Procedures. Actively participates in the University's campus-wide sustainability efforts, initiates and supports opportunities in collaboration with the University's Sustainability Office. Interacts with the first level operations staff, and as needed to support customers & other departmental senior management, service providers.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electronical, Mechanical or Industrial or Controls Engineering, or another related technical field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ontario P.Eng. license and be in good standing.
  • Minimum an overall 5-year related experience in building automation and Management systems in design and/or implementation Building Automation network maintenance within a utility’s environment.
  • Minimum of 5-years of experience in the HVAC industry designing, installing, operation and maintenance of building automation systems and components within a utilities environment.
  • Experience managing staff in a unionized environment.
  • Strong expertise in building automation systems (BAS) and Building Management design, implementation, and optimization, including HVAC controls and instrumentation.
  • Proficient in control systems engineering (PLC, DDC, SCADA) and building management systems (BMS), with hands-on experience in large scale automation networks such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
  • Skilled in system commissioning, testing, integration, and control logic development.
  • Experienced in evaluating technical documentation, ensuring adherence to industry standards, and implementing safety systems for equipment and occupancy.
  • Capable of conducting risk assessments and aligning projects with institutional policies.
  • Adept at system monitoring, alarm management, fault diagnostics, and performance optimization.
  • Strong focus on preventive maintenance and enforcing standard operating procedures.
  • Skilled in interpreting drawings and specifications.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage staff in unionized environments, make critical decisions under pressure, and maintain smooth operations.
  • Effective in coordinating with internal teams, senior management, and external service providers while managing vendors and project stakeholders
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence others to gain consensus.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, especially during critical situations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills.
  • Skills in handling emergencies and unexpected situations efficiently, effective problem solving.
  • Proficiency with DDC (Direct Digital Controllers) preferably with Johnsons Metasys, Siemens Desigo Honeywell, Comfort Point is required
  • Other BAS systems like Schneider Electric and Automated Logic will also be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial and/or commercial HVAC instrumentation is not required but would be preferred
  • Experience in Control Room operations or managing in a control room setting is highly desirable with an understanding of operations, and extensive knowledge of Control systems.
  • Experience managing a team, making critical decisions under pressure, and ensuring smooth operations.
  • Experience in building operations within utilities or large facilities, including maintenance of automation systems and control room operations will be a strong asset.
  • Familiar with the use of computerized maintenance management systems and/or computerized work order systems, experience with SAP Asset Manager would be considered an asset.
