About The Position

MMR Consulting is seeking a Building Automation Engineer (Siemens) for a role focused on the design, project execution, and commissioning of process systems within the biopharmaceutical industry. This position is based in San Diego, California, with occasional travel to other client sites expected. The successful candidate will join a team of engineers and specialists working on life sciences facilities, providing engineering and project management services. The role requires leadership skills to guide junior engineers, equipment vendors, and contractors.

Requirements

  • Previous Pharmaceutical/Biotech experience is mandatory.
  • Engineering degree, preferably in Electrical, Electromechanical, Controls, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5+ years of pharma building automation engineering experience (8+ years preferred).
  • At least 3 years (5+ years preferred) of building controls experience with BAS.
  • Knowledge of Siemens Insight or Desigo, including reading code and making small code modifications.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings and Siemens BAS Code (Insight or Desigo).
  • Possess leadership skills to lead projects involving multiple stakeholders, departments, and varying complexity.
  • Possess mentorship skills to coach and develop junior and intermediate employees.
  • Knowledge of GMP requirements for working in pharma/biotech facilities.
  • Basic understanding of SOPs, Validation, and Change Controls.
  • Knowledge of GAMP and data integrity requirements.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, including the preparation of technical documents in English.
  • Compliance with client's safety rules, including mandatory vaccination policies for COVID-19, where applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance for the design, project management, commissioning, and start-up of automation systems for client facilities and processes, including upgrades, renovations, and expansions.
  • Support project execution from Feasibility through to project completion/handover, covering all project stages such as Feasibility, Concept Design, Basic Design, Detailed Design, Procurement, Construction, Project Monitoring/Governance, and Commissioning & Qualification.
  • Prepare, perform, and review electrical drawings, including Panel Drawings, wiring diagrams, and single line drawings.
  • Perform programming and configuration on Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Review programming done by equipment vendors and other automation firms.
  • Perform automation and electrical troubleshooting on electrical panels and control systems.
  • Facilitate work efforts with other disciplines such as Process Engineering, Mechanical, Validation, and client's internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and review User Requirements Specifications (URS), Functional Requirements Specifications (FRS), SDS, DDS, and Valve & Alarm Matrices.
  • Provide input into Commissioning (FAT, SAT) and Qualification Protocols (IQOQ), and support their execution.
  • Facilitate project management tools throughout project execution, including procurement tracking, vendor management, meeting minutes/action lists, risk register logs, schedule updates, and project updates.
  • Coordinate meetings with cross-functional departments to drive project progress, facilitate decisions, and provide updates.
  • Occasionally travel for meetings with clients, equipment fabrication vendors, or Factory Acceptance Testing (FATs).
  • Provide occasional support during shutdowns or extended hours, particularly during installation and commissioning/validation phases.
  • Manage client relationships to support business development and new work opportunities.
  • Manage project scheduling and budgeting.
  • Coordinate client and MMR resources for effective project delivery.
  • Support business development by providing technical support for proposals and opportunities.
  • Present at industry conferences and publish papers.
  • Visit construction and installation sites.
  • Supervise contractors during critical installations of process equipment and associated utilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the client and/or MMR based on workload and project requirements.
