About The Position

UNC Charlotte is seeking a Building Envelope Architect/Engineer to join their Facilities Management team. This newly created role will serve as the primary technical authority for the physical integrity and performance of the campus built environment, focusing on building enclosures, interior architectural finishes, and vertical transportation systems. The position offers a unique blend of building science, forensic investigation, design review, commissioning, and field work, aiming to ensure the long-term durability, maintainability, and performance of university facilities. This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable with both design document review and site investigations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering and at least five years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform complex building science analysis and forensic investigations.
• Degree(s) from appropriately accredited institutions.
• Strong knowledge of building science principles, including thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, and airflow management as they relate to building envelopes.
• Ability to evaluate building performance and diagnose complex system failures.
• Experience working across the design-to-operations lifecycle and collaborating effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, facilities professionals, and skilled trades.
• Knowledge of relevant building, energy, life-safety, and vertical transportation codes and standards.
• Ability to communicate technical recommendations clearly and negotiate material or system selections with external design partners.
• Comfort moving between design review, technical meetings, field investigations, site walks, and active facilities environments.
• Valid driver’s license, as the role requires site visits and regular operation of University vehicles.

Nice To Haves

• Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) licensure.
• Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP), Registered Roof Observer (RRO), or Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) credential.
• Advanced expertise in building envelopes within humid subtropical climates.
• Experience investigating water intrusion, air barrier failures, flooring substrate issues, and other building-performance concerns.
• Deep familiarity with the North Carolina International Building Code, NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1.
• Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the University’s technical authority for building enclosure systems, interior architectural finishes, and vertical transportation systems.
• Establish, maintain, and help enforce Design and Construction Manual (DCM) standards, applying building science principles related to thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, airflow, and long-term performance.
• Review design documents and participate in project planning to identify building envelope, code compliance, maintainability, and lifecycle concerns.
• Direct Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) activities for capital projects.
• Conduct forensic investigations of building failures, including water intrusion, air barrier deficiencies, moisture-related problems, and flooring substrate issues.
• Develop practical remediation strategies that balance technical performance, lifecycle cost, and ongoing maintenance requirements.
• Partner closely with Maintenance Operations and skilled trades to ensure design decisions support long-term maintainability.
• Serve as a technical liaison with external architects, engineers, consultants, and design firms.
• Support asset management and lifecycle planning for building enclosure, interior finish, and vertical transportation systems.
• Protect the integrity of fire ratings, thermal boundaries, acoustic separations, and other critical building systems during renovations and modifications.
• Apply applicable requirements of the North Carolina International Building Code, NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators.
• Champion a “Total Building Performance” approach that helps UNC Charlotte reduce risk, improve durability, and minimize total cost of ownership.
