Build & Test Technician

NIRSense Inc.Durham, NC

About The Position

NIRSense is seeking a detail-oriented and hands-on Build and Test Technician to support our Mechanical Engineering Team. This role is critical to our product development cycle, focusing on the system-level assembly, integration, bring-up, and testing of new electronics hardware. In addition to building and validating complex electro-mechanical systems, this position plays an important role in refining build processes, improving documentation, supporting design iterations, and helping transition prototypes into repeatable manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will be proficient in assembling complex electro-mechanical systems from engineering drawings, capable of meticulously executing test plans, identifying integration issues, and collaborating closely with engineers to solve technical challenges and continuously improve product quality and manufacturing readiness. Soldering and rework skills are highly desirable but secondary to strong system-build capabilities and a continuous improvement mindset.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree (AS) in Electronics Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrable experience in electro-mechanical or system-level assembly and testing in an ESD-controlled environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret manufacturing and test instructions, system-level assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Hands-on experience with basic electronic test and measurement equipment (DMM, oscilloscope, power supplies).
  • Experience with running automated test scripts (e.g., Python).
  • Familiarity with quality system procedures and documentation (e.g., ISO 9001).
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient for handling delicate electrical and mechanical tasks.
  • Clear communication skills for reporting test results and collaborating effectively with engineers on debugging tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Soldering and rework skills are highly desirable but secondary to strong system-build capabilities and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Prior experience with 3-D printing is desirable but not a requirement.
  • 2+ years of experience in a similar electronics or system technician role.
  • Experience in a fast-paced R&D or new product introduction (NPI) environment.
  • Experience in an FDA regulated medical device development environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and integrate electronic subsystems, PCBs, and components into final enclosures and test racks. Build and route complex wire harnesses and cables according to diagrams.
  • Power on and perform initial diagnostics and calibration on fully assembled systems, working closely with engineers to troubleshoot and resolve integration, communication, or power issues.
  • Run established system-level test procedures and validation plans using standard test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.).
  • Handle light mechanical assembly for various circuit boards as well as 3D printing, molding, and inspection of various subassembly components.
  • Set-up and processing of 3-D printed parts and part inspection following existing instructions. Prior experience with 3-D printing is desirable but not a requirement.
  • Setting up and operating a low volume / low pressure molding machine and process following written procedures.
  • Meticulously document test results, system failures, and bugs. Initiate and organize build and test documentation including work orders, travelers, and inventory transfers.
  • Provide expertise in developing and enforcing GMP procedures and best practices.
