BSR Noise & Vibration Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Acoustics team works to deliver high-quality sound experiences across Apple products. The Noise & Vibration team contributes to hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting to reduce distracting audible noises and optimize sound quality. As a BSR Noise & Vibration Engineer, you will quantify noises, facilitate user studies, and establish thresholds in laboratory and factory environments. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot noises found during testing, identify their sources, and provide design feedback to help resolve them. You will lead analysis of validation work to understand root causes, and author procedures, test plans, and specifications. As part of the team, you will develop objective test stations and facilitate their use. You will work closely with team members supporting product-development builds at factories and travel minimally, with willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, or an equivalent field.
  • At least 5 years of product-development experience that includes acoustic design validation and vibration mitigation design.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of acoustic and vibration principles and how motion in mechanical systems produces radiated noise.
  • Acoustic and vibration measurement skills, including measurements in anechoic or hemi-anechoic chambers and data analysis or signal-processing methodologies.
  • Ability to quantify the relationship between noise response and system excitation, such as motion or thermal excitation, to guide design improvements.
  • Excellent hearing across the audible frequency range.
  • Ability to communicate complex information and concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creative problem-solving ability and comfort in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis methods.
  • Experience with precision-grade instrumentation, including ultra-low-noise measurements.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic actuators.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or other flexible data-analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Quantify noises, facilitate user studies, and establish thresholds in laboratory and factory environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot noises identified during testing, identify their sources, and provide design feedback.
  • Lead analysis of validation work to understand root causes of problems.
  • Author procedures, test plans, and specifications.
  • Develop objective test stations and facilitate their use.
  • Work with team members supporting product-development builds at factories.
