BSR Noise & Vibration Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Acoustics team works to deliver high-quality sound experiences across its products. The Noise & Vibration team contributes to hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting to minimize distracting audible noises and optimize sound quality. The team works with cross-functional partners on engineering challenges throughout product development. As a BSR Noise & Vibration Engineer, you will quantify noises, facilitate user studies, and establish thresholds in laboratory and factory environments. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot noises found during testing, identify their sources, and provide design feedback to help resolve them. You will lead validation analysis to understand root causes, author procedures, test plans, and specifications, and develop objective test stations with the team. You will work closely with team members supporting product development builds at factories and travel minimally, while being willing to travel domestically and internationally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, or an equivalent field.
  • At least 5 years of product development experience, including acoustic design validation and vibration mitigation design.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Knowledge of acoustic and vibration principles and how mechanical-system motion produces radiated noise.
  • Acoustic and vibration measurement skills, including experience measuring in anechoic or hemi-anechoic chambers and using data analysis and signal-processing methodologies.
  • Ability to quantify the relationship between noise response and system excitation, such as motion, thermal, or other excitation, to guide design improvements.
  • Excellent hearing across the audible frequency range and accomplished listening skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex information and concepts effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with statistical analysis methods.
  • Experience with precision-grade instrumentation, including ultra-low-noise measurements.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic actuators.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or other flexible data-analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Quantify noises, facilitate user studies, and establish noise thresholds in laboratory and factory environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot noises found during testing, identify their sources, and provide design feedback.
  • Lead analysis of validation work to understand root causes of problems.
  • Author procedures, test plans, and specifications.
  • Develop objective test stations with the team and facilitate their use.
  • Work with team members supporting product development builds at factories.
  • Travel as needed for the role.
