About The Position

Candidates are invited to apply for the part-time position of BSO Lead at our Haliburton home, located in Haliburton, Ontario. This role is responsible for leading the Responsive Behaviours Program, coordinating interdisciplinary team meetings, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. The BSO Lead will also be responsible for coordinating training and support for staff, residents, and families in managing responsive behaviours, completing required reports and statistics, and analyzing quality indicators and medication use. This position requires a strong understanding of resident care, documentation, and relevant legislation.

Requirements

  • Currently registered as an RPN in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certificates
  • Extensive knowledge of P.I.E.C.E.S.TM, Gentle Persuasive Approach, U-First!, Montessori
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge and skill working with individuals with various types of dementia, delirium, mental health, addictions, other neurological conditions and those who experience an acute behavioural change
  • Demonstrated person and caregiver focused care and supported by best evidence-based clinical practices
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and principles of the Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) program
  • Strong physical and behavioural assessment skills for evaluating dementias, cognitive impairments, depressions, and deliriums, mental health and addictions
  • Excellent critical thinking skills for the early detection, intervention, and prevention of responsive behaviours
  • Good understanding of non-pharmacological and therapeutic behavioural approaches
  • Good understanding of pharmacological agents, and their interactions, that are used to manage conditions that have behavioural components along the disease continuum
  • Demonstrated trouble-shooting and problem-solving approach relative to behavioural exacerbations
  • Knowledge of and commitment to knowledge exchange as a means of continuous quality improvement, education and capacity building in the individual, team, organization, and system
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, flexibility and commitment to change management
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a team member through collaboration, respect and effective communication skills in interacting with residents, family members and other members of inter-professional teams, including community partners
  • Demonstrates leadership in applying strategies to catalyze, foster and enhance collaboration and communication
  • Experience and knowledge in analyzing data from assessments, Abbey Pain Scale, Dementia Observation System (DOS), Cornell Depression Scale, etc.
  • 3-5 years experience in long-term care
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Long-Term Care Homes Act and Regulations and other legislation that is relevant
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Canadian certificate in Gerontology considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Lead for the Responsive Behaviours Program
  • Coordinates the BSO interdisciplinary team meetings and rounds working collaboratively with social work, pharmacy and physicians
  • Participates actively with the Professional Advisory Committee, Medical Advisory Committee, Quality Committee and other teams as required
  • Coordinates training and support for all staff, residents, families and volunteers in managing responsive behaviours
  • Completes all required reports and statistics as required for the home, CELHIN and MOHLTC
  • Contributes to the completion of annual quality protocols and program evaluations
  • Sets goals, creates action plans and ensures follow up is completed
  • Completes analysis, creates and presents detailed reports on quality indicators and medication use using PCC, Analytics and other software as required
  • Oversees the completion of all documentation related to behaviours, DOS monitoring, assessments
  • Respects and preserves the privacy, confidentiality and security of health care information at all times
  • Monitor MDS indicators, outcome scores and RUG scores to inform program planning and evaluation
  • Provides leadership in streamlining MDS assessment integration with existing clinical tools
  • Adheres to responsibilities and requirements for reporting adverse resident occurrences subject to regulatory and legislative direction
