About The Position

This is a fundamental research role focused on catching browser-based bots that evade current detection methods. The intern will conduct original research, studying how modern bots evade detection at the browser level and inventing new signals to catch them. Over a four-month period, the goal is to generate and validate new detection signals and ideas that can be integrated into GeoComply's BrowserGuard product. The intern's findings will be validated against real customer data and handed over to the engineering team for implementation. The role also includes "Stretch Opportunities" for high-value projects outside the immediate scope, allowing exploration of new skills and challenges.

Requirements

  • Master's or PhD-level computer science student or recent grad, or equivalent depth of knowledge.
  • Proficiency as a programmer with research instincts, demonstrated by work where the answer wasn't known in advance.
  • Understanding of bleeding-edge bot detection and fraud strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of JavaScript and comfort with or ability to learn Chromium internals and internet protocols.
  • Independent and relentlessly curious, with a proactive approach to understanding how things work.

Nice To Haves

  • Contributions to the Chromium project or other open-source browser or security work.
  • Prior research in bot detection, anti-fraud, anti-spoofing, or adversarial ML.
  • Published or presented original technical research.

Responsibilities

  • Study how browser-based bots evade current detection, working close to the Chromium and JavaScript internals.
  • Form and test original hypotheses about bot evasion techniques, producing new detection signals and feature ideas for BrowserGuard.
  • Validate proposed detection signals against real customer data to ensure they catch bots without flagging real users.
  • Hand over validated signals to the engineering team in a buildable format.
  • Engage in special, high-value projects outside the immediate scope of the role as part of "Stretch Opportunities".
