The Department of Social Services (DSS) includes the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). DHS focuses on preventing homelessness, addressing street homelessness, providing temporary shelter, and connecting individuals to housing. HRA is committed to fighting poverty by providing essential benefits like Cash, Food, and Rental Assistance, and Medicaid. The DSS Medical and Health Services Office aims to improve the health and well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness, reduce health risks, and increase access to care. The Health Service Office is launching the Bronx Hub Project to reduce street homelessness and substance use risks in the South Bronx. This project will collaborate with various agencies and organizations to identify causes of homelessness and substance use, and design interventions for transitions into harm reduction, healthcare, shelters, safe havens, or permanent housing. Project staff will lead interagency efforts to identify individuals experiencing homelessness in public spaces, coordinate transitions to shelters, provide street-based healthcare, enhance shelter capacity for risk reduction services, and offer complex care coordination for high-needs individuals.
