Broadcast Media IP Engineer

StarzGreenwood Village, CO
Hybrid

About The Position

The Broadcast Media IP Engineer is responsible for the implementation, operation, and optimization of IP-based media systems across cloud-native and traditional broadcast environments. This role focuses on real-time video workflows and supports the end-to-end lifecycle of live and linear content—from ingest and processing through transport and playout—ensuring reliable, low-latency, and high-quality execution. As an experienced individual contributor, this role operates with moderate autonomy, contributing to the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of scalable, IP-centric media systems while collaborating with senior engineers and cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience in broadcast engineering, media workflows, or IP-based video environments.
  • Proven experience supporting live video workflows across on site, cloud and IP-based platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of video codecs and formats (MPEG-TS, H.264/H.265, AAC).
  • Experience with IP-based media transport protocols (RTP, RTMP, SRT, Zixi, RIST).
  • Familiarity with streaming protocols and workflows (HLS, MPEG-DASH).
  • Hands-on experience with media processing systems (FFmpeg, AWS Elemental, Harmonic, CommScope or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and cloud-native media services.
  • Proficiency with Linux systems and scripting (Python, Bash).
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools across distributed systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to operate independently.
  • Ability to perform in fast-paced, live production environments with time-sensitive constraints.
  • Effective communication and collaboration across technical and operational teams.
  • Demonstrated ownership of systems and workflows, with a focus on continuous learning and improvement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with broadcast automation, playout, or master control systems.
  • Familiarity with SCTE standards and IP-based signaling workflows.
  • Exposure to containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Understanding of IP media transport architectures, including multicast and timing concepts.
  • Experience supporting fiber/IP contribution and real-time media transport systems.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of scalable, high-performance media systems supporting live and linear workflows across on-site, cloud, and IP-based platforms.
  • Operate and optimize cloud-based media services alongside broadcast playback infrastructure, automation systems, scheduling platforms, M&C, and metadata services.
  • Own day-to-day ingest, encoding, processing, and transport workflows for live and linear content across IP-based environments.
  • Support playout systems and automation infrastructure to ensure continuity, synchronization, and reliability of service.
  • Apply established architectures and best practices across media ingest, processing, and transport workflows.
  • Implement and tune encoding, processing, and transport configurations to improve system performance, latency, and reliability.
  • Deploy, configure, and support video processing systems—including encoders, transcoders, and processing services—across cloud and hybrid environments (e.g., AWS Media Services, FFmpeg, Elemental, Harmonic, CommScope).
  • Ensure reliable, low-latency transport of video streams across IP-based contribution and distribution networks over fiber, cloud, and IP infrastructure.
  • Support integration between cloud-native media workflows and traditional broadcast systems, enabling interoperability across hybrid environments.
  • Leverage APIs, messaging frameworks, and automation tools to improve workflow efficiency, repeatability, and operational scalability.
  • Contribute to automation and metadata-driven workflows supporting media lifecycle and system orchestration.
  • Follow architectural standards and partner with senior engineers to improve system scalability, resiliency, and performance.
  • Monitor system health, availability, and performance across on-site, cloud, and IP-based broadcast environments.
  • Ensure signal integrity, timing accuracy, and consistent quality of service across IP transport and playout paths.
  • Support real-time media transport workflows and adaptive streaming processes where applicable.
  • Assist in managing encryption and content protection mechanisms across IP-based systems.
  • Monitor transport streams, synchronization, and metadata, identifying and resolving issues impacting quality and reliability.
  • Respond to incidents, perform structured troubleshooting, and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and network teams to resolve issues impacting media workflows and system performance.
  • Partner with broadcast operations, IP/network engineering, cloud infrastructure, and product teams to support and improve media workflows.
  • Participate in system testing, QA validation, and deployment of media platform changes.
  • Work with vendors and partners to troubleshoot issues, validate integrations, and enhance platform capabilities.
  • Ensure adherence to broadcast standards, IP transport protocols, and content protection requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures for media systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, performance, and operational efficiency.
