About The Position

This position involves participating in a crew engaged in the maintenance, repair, reconstruction, and strengthening of wooden, steel, and concrete bridges, box culverts, and related structures of the state highway system. Responsibilities include welding and fabricating, framing forms and finishing concrete, sandblasting and painting, replacing bridge elements, and pressure washing and cleaning infrastructure. The role also assists in other maintenance and construction activities on state highways and bridges, and responds to seasonal operations, including winter operations as needed. Work is performed under the supervision of a crew supervisor, with potential for occasional supervision of assisting personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a senior high school or equivalent.
  • Experience in heavy construction, maintenance of highway bridges or similar structures, or fabrication of materials for bridge or similar structure repairs, or any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above.
  • Working knowledge of methods and materials used in repairing, renovating, and reconstructing highway roadbeds, surfaces, structures, and facilities (asphalt, concrete, steel, wood).
  • General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of transportation maintenance equipment.
  • General knowledge of emergency procedures for directing traffic during lane closures and detours.
  • General knowledge of safety practices and precautions in highway maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of practices, materials, and methods used in the fabrication of steel bridges and steel bridge parts.
  • Working knowledge of materials and methods commonly used in the repairing, altering, maintenance, or construction of bridges.
  • Familiarity with materials and methods used in wash or other kinds of borings used in bridge construction or maintenance.
  • General skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of highway maintenance equipment.
  • Some skill in arc welding, acetylene welding, oxygen cutting, and riveting.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and keep written records of work.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with airbrake and tanker endorsements, within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Compliance with USDOT Federal Regulations and the State of Rhode Island’s Drug & Alcohol Testing Program Policy & Procedures.
  • Pass a physical examination, with spirometry and respiratory clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Must obtain and maintain a Hoisting License with an Aerial Lift Restricted Endorsement and Hydraulic Crane Restricted Endorsement within six (6) months of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the maintenance, repair, reconstruction, and strengthening of wooden, steel, and concrete bridges, box culverts, and related structures.
  • Weld and fabricate, frame out forms and finish concrete, sandblast and paint, replace bridge elements, and pressure wash and clean infrastructure.
  • Assist in other maintenance and construction activities on state highways and bridges.
  • Respond to seasonal operations, including winter operations.
  • Assist in the field supervision of and participate in the repair, alteration, and construction of highway bridges.
  • Clean, sand, and remove debris from piers, beam seats, decks, drains, and the general bridge area.
  • Cut, place, rivet, and perform welding work on steel plates and bars using acetylene cutting equipment.
  • Cut, fit, and splice heavy timbers; lay bridge flooring, build form work and scaffolding, and assemble trusses.
  • Operate concrete mixers, make proper mixtures, and assist in placing and finishing concrete.
  • Perform joint sealing, pointing, caulking, and painting.
  • Scrape scaling and deteriorated paint from structural steel and paint steel with primer and proper overcoat.
  • Assist in wash and core boring.
  • Operate and care for a variety of highway and bridge construction and maintenance machinery and equipment.
  • Assist in instructing and training new employees.
  • Assist in investigatory work precedent to operations.
  • Participate in seasonal emergency operations as a safety-sensitive equipment operator.
  • Perform safety-sensitive functions as a licensed commercial motor vehicle operator, ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Assist in plowing snow and de-icing roads as required.
  • Perform duties in a variety of environmental and weather conditions.
  • Perform related work as required.
