About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 to join their team in Renton, WA. Under the direction of a Maintenance Specialist 5 or Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead, this role involves performing journey-level work to support the safe and reliable maintenance, repair, and operation of approximately 1,300 bridges throughout the Northwest Region. The position offers an opportunity to apply trade skills on a diverse range of bridges while contributing to a strong Culture of Safety and a workplace built on respect, professionalism, and collaboration.

Requirements

Demonstrated journey-level knowledge, skills, and ability to independently perform skilled work in a recognized construction or mechanical trade, such as steel fabrication, carpentry, electrical, concrete, mechanics, millwright work, or closely related trade.
Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings.
Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles or watercraft.
Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.
Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to get one within 6 months of employment.
Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 100 feet over land or water.

Responsibilities

Perform repairs and maintenance to bridges, tunnels and other structures.
Perform Journey-level bridge maintenance and repair work, including tasks involving both structural and non-structural elements.
Perform repairs to timber components including caps, piles, stringers.
Clear logs and other large debris away from Piers and other critical parts of the bridges.
Fabricate steel and aluminum components using proper tools and techniques depending on the task assigned.
Adhere to safety policies and maintain diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
Ensure safe handling of hazardous substances and hazardous objects.
Perform safe operation of all equipment and tools and implement effective traffic control planning.
Perform duties low to the ground or at ground level and perform duties at elevated heights, above 100 feet catwalks, UBIT or suspended staging, over land or water.
