About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking multiple skilled and safety-focused Bridge Maintenance Specialists to join their Southwest Region team in Vancouver, Washington. These positions play a critical role in preserving and maintaining WSDOT-owned bridge structures throughout the Southwest Region. As members of the regional maintenance organization, Bridge Maintenance Specialists perform journey-level work involving the inspection, maintenance, repair, operation, and reconstruction of bridge infrastructure to ensure the continued safety and reliability of Washington’s transportation system. Utilizing a wide variety of specialized bridge maintenance equipment, vehicles, and tools, these positions are responsible for maintaining more than 650 bridges across the Southwest Region in good or fair condition. Through skilled craftsmanship, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety, Bridge Maintenance Specialists help ensure the safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and services while protecting one of the state's most valuable transportation assets.

Requirements

  • Practical knowledge of highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining various Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles following WSDOT standards.
  • Proven ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
  • Must be able to report in service to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.
  • Ability to obtain a valid traffic control/flagging card within six (6) months of hire.
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS).
  • Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field.
  • Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision making and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates journey-level technical proficiency by independently performing all core trade tasks such as Carpentry, fabrication, and/or excavation to applicable codes and specifications; accurately interpreting blueprints, plans, and technical documents; selecting and properly using tools, equipment, and materials; and consistently delivering high-quality work within expected timeframes, with the ability to identify and correct errors or deficiencies with minimal supervision.

  • The ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 100 feet, over land or water.
  • The ability to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of traffic control principles, practices, and safety requirements in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to plan, establish, maintain, and remove traffic control zones using signs, cones, barrels, and other traffic control devices, while ensuring the safety of workers and the traveling public.
  • Ability to perform flagging operations and adapt traffic control measures to changing roadway and worksite conditions.
  • Knowledge of environmental stewardship principles and Best Management Practices (BMPs) related to roadway maintenance, construction, and operational activities.
  • Ability to identify, implement, and maintain appropriate BMPs to prevent erosion, sedimentation, pollution, and other environmental impacts while complying with applicable regulations, policies, and agency requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain bridge structures per Bridge Office direction and Maintenance Manual.
  • Perform maintenance and structural repairs on floating, moving, and fixed structures on an ongoing basis and in emergencies when damage is caused by the motoring public or acts of nature.
  • Diagnose deficiencies and repair/replace bridge components.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) such as drain cleaning, bridge deck sealing, painting, expansion joint cleaning and bridge cleaning.
  • Maintain, modify, and repair components of bridge structures.
  • Utilize the Spill Control and Countermeasure Plan to control and prevent generation of hazardous waste.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Assure adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel.
  • Develop solutions for repair and maintenance problems.
  • Operate small boats.
  • Enter and utilize DATA in Maintenance Productivity Enhancement Tool (M-PET) and Bridge Engineering Information System (BEIST) to document both program generated preventive and corrective maintenance items completed, and non-system generated work accomplished.
  • Perform maintenance level inspections of bridges and components.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as small boats, man lifts and Under Bridge Inspection Trucks.
  • Perform traffic control.
