About The Position

The Alexandria Health District WIC Program is seeking an enthusiastic qualified individual to work in our WIC Office as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. This role promotes breastfeeding among WIC participants, health care workers, and the community. The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor attends local, regional, or state breastfeeding promotion and support training when possible and operates within the BFPC scope of practice as defined in the WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum. This position participates in multidisciplinary team case conferencing to develop and implement WIC participant service plans and may represent the Local Agency and WIC on interdisciplinary workgroups, taskforces, or coalitions. Alexandria Health Department (AHD) serves the residents, businesses, and visitors of Alexandria and works closely with the City of Alexandria and community partners. AHD's mission is “Protecting and Promoting Health and Well-Being in Our Communities” and its vision is “Healthy People, Healthier Communities.” This is a restricted position solely funded by the WIC Federal grant, renewable annually on October 1st. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant funds. Wage employees are subject to specific conditions of employment, including serving at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority, with continuing employment based on available funding and business need. Wage employees are not covered by the Virginia Personnel Act and are therefore not eligible for benefits provided to salaried employees. They are paid only for hours worked and are limited to working an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a year, not exceeding 1,500 hours annually. Wage employees are eligible to apply for classified positions and may purchase retirement credit for time worked as a wage employee if they transition to a classified position.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Basic human lactation.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Breastfeeding practices.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Various positioning techniques.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Basic breastfeeding management.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Manual expression of breast milk.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Collection and storage of human milk.
  • Demonstrate a Working Knowledge of: Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated Ability to: Instruct in a group and individual setting.
  • Demonstrated Ability to: Recognize problems related to breastfeeding and make appropriate referrals/interventions.

  • Current or former WIC participant
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
