About The Position

Paraprofessional support person with in-depth knowledge of the art of breastfeeding and the basic anatomy of the breast. Must have a commitment to promote and support breastfeeding women and their families within the WIC program according to participant’s language and cultural norms. Candidate should exhibit good nurturing skills and project enthusiasm for assisting pregnant and breastfeeding mothers within a participant centered environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Successful completions of the Peer Counselor Training Program through the local agency.
  • Candidate should be a current or former WIC participant or is from the community served by the local agency.
  • Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
  • PC must be trained on FNS WIC Breastfeeding curriculum.
  • Available to work at least 20 hours per week.
  • One-year experience as a breastfeeding peer counselor plus at least one-year experience counseling breastfeeding women
  • Experience and/or demonstrated capacity to perform all required responsibilities in a professional manner.
  • Peer counselor must have breastfed at least one baby.
  • Ability to interact with Clients and staff through active listening, Proper business language and tone of voice to obtain information and/or completing tasks.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to add subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
