About The Position

The Branch Manager, Workforce Safety, Security and Employee Health works closely with all employees across the organization, union partners, and industry leaders. Reporting to the Deputy City Manager, Corporate Services, this role provides strategic leadership to progress from a compliance focus to a proactive loss prevention mandate, integrating safety and security management systems with innovation to understand and address risk and costs associated with workplace injuries and incidents. As the successful candidate, you will lead a branch of almost 70 employees and champion the City’s safety, security, and employee health practices, processes, and culture, ensuring the City of Edmonton is leading the way in workplace safety, disability management and return to work, and employee health support.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, training, and/or education in Business, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Significant experience in a leadership role(s) related to corporate safety, security management and/or health program implementation in a large and complex organization
  • Broad exposure to workplace and public safety and employee health practices of excellence within a large organization
  • Knowledge of relevant municipal government and provincial legislation
  • Combinations of education and experience will be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification related to health and safety program development.
  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation
  • Master’s Degree in a related field

Responsibilities

  • Championing the strategic direction of safety, health, and disability management programs, systems, and initiatives, and translating this direction into branch and corporate-level programs required to achieve the City’s vision and priorities
  • Ensuring the corporation’s alignment with, and adherence to the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Code, and actively representing the City of Edmonton on external Provincial and governmental committees, boards, and meetings including the Government of Alberta Health and Safety Committee
  • Assessing priorities and identifying gaps in existing safety and health programming, and services to provide leadership and guidance to the corporation through influencing and motivating active integration of Occupational Health and Safety practices into business areas’ everyday operations and culture
  • Providing strategic oversight and partnership on matters related to workforce and physical security, ensuring alignment between employee safety protocols and corporate security standards
  • Ensuring the prudent and effective use of financial resources in the conceptualization and delivery of the corporation’s, department’s, and branch work
  • Lead the alignment of structure, process, competencies, leadership style, and culture to the strategy of the branch and department, and advance the corporation in adopting and embracing a leading safety culture of excellence
  • Lead the Branch and Departments across the organization in building and championing customer service standards of excellence in the delivery of safety, health and security services
  • Oversee the development of measurable and effective safety, health and security metrics and ensure associated performance measures are consistently implemented, monitored, and achieved
  • Foster integration within the Corporation to ensure a thorough and seamless delivery of programs, projects, and services
