About The Position

To support the educational needs of students who are blind or visually impaired by providing accurate and timely transcription, preparation, and production of Braille and other accessible instructional materials.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Competence in Braille production and transcribing; knowledge of the discriminative attributes related to visually impaired persons; ability to design and develop tactile graphics; knowledge of Abacus use, basic cane skills and knowledge of daily living skills related to visually impaired persons or the ability to obtain required proficiency through training.
Ability to accurately transcribe, format, and proofread instructional materials in Braille or the ability to obtain proficiency through training.
Ability to operate computers, Braille translation software, embossers, and other specialized equipment used in the preparation of accessible instructional materials.

Nice To Haves

Training and/or certification in Braille are highly desirable
Experience working in an educational setting or preparing accessible materials for individuals who are blind or visually impaired preferred.

Responsibilities

Transcribes printed and electronic instructional materials into Braille using appropriate Braille codes, rules, and formatting standards.
Prepares or assists in preparing specialized materials including mathematical and scientific content, tables, charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, and tactile graphics.
Proofreads completed Braille materials for accuracy, proper formatting, completeness, and readability.
Operates Braille translation software, embossers, computers, scanners, printers, and other specialized equipment necessary to prepare accessible instructional materials.
Prepares instructional materials in other accessible formats, including large print and electronic formats, as assigned.
Works cooperatively with Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, special education teachers, classroom teachers, and other appropriate staff to determine materials needed for students.
Coordinates and prioritizes requests for Braille and accessible materials to ensure materials are available to students in a timely manner.
Maintains organized electronic and physical files of Braille and other accessible instructional materials.
Maintains Braille equipment, supplies, materials, and other resources assigned to the position and reports equipment or supply needs to the appropriate administrator.
Maintains confidentiality of student information and educational records in accordance with district policy and applicable state and federal requirements.
Completes reports, records, and other school-related paperwork as required, at or before the time requested.
Accepts responsibility and arrives punctually for activities and duties as assigned.
Maintains knowledge of current Braille standards, accessible-material practices, assistive technology, and equipment related to the position.
Provides for his/her own professional growth through appropriate training, workshops, conferences, coursework, and other professional development opportunities.
Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administrator.
