About The Position

This position is for the 2026/2027 season. There are two vacancies: Boys Basketball JV Head Coach and Boys Basketball Freshman Head Coach. The JV head coach assists in planning, developing, and implementing policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures for an interscholastic sports program. Head junior varsity/secondary head coaches provide leadership and vision within the athletic program, organizing and supporting oversight of all aspects of the program to ensure it meets the needs of the school district and its participants. A Secondary Head Coach designation is for programs without a designated Junior Varsity level.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Red Cross First Aid Certificate, including CPR training methods and procedures.
  • Successful completion of Concussion Management and other training courses required by the OSAA.
  • Successful completion of the District’s background check process.
  • A year of prior Interscholastic athletic or coaching experience (knowledge of sport).
  • Experience in, or understanding of sport to be coached.
  • Must meet OSAA standards for coaching certificate.
  • Knowledge of athletic conditioning and care/prevention of injuries.
  • Must be a minimum of 22 years of age.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the basic and advanced aspects of the sport.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with state, conference, league, and school training, rules, and regulations.
  • Understanding of child growth, development, and behavior with knowledge of assessment techniques and monitoring strategies to identify student/athlete’s efforts, performance, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Thorough knowledge of and compliance with all state, conference, league, and school rules and regulations, and policies approved by Eugene School District 4J, OSAA, and NFHS.
  • Knowledge of policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to interscholastic athletics and activities.

Nice To Haves

  • High school basketball coaching experience.
  • Possession of a valid TSPC license.
  • Possession of an earned baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university in physical education, or closely related areas.
  • Two years of experience as a high school interscholastic coach.
  • Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures for an interscholastic sports program.
  • Provide leadership and vision within the athletic program.
  • Organize and support the oversight of all aspects of the program.
  • Ensure the program meets the needs of the school district and its participants.
  • Provide training and coaching through motivational techniques and strategies to improve individual and group performance.
  • Supervise and provide support and vision for the individual sport program and all teams under their supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective organization, community, and public relationships.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff, and community populations.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA and adherence to competent and ethical educator practices.
  • Maintain compliance with state and federal laws governing all aspects of our agency including ORS, OAR, IDEA, FOIA, and CIPA.
  • Prioritize tasks, ensure timely completion of work assignments, take initiative, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respectful, flexible, and effective teambuilding skills of cooperation, communication, and active participation.
  • Present self and ESD4J in a professional manner, including oral and written communication, professional disposition when working with others, and maintaining professional dress standards.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directives, find requested data, and present it in user-friendly formats for internal and public distribution.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.
  • Utilize teleservice platform to provide services to educators, students, and district staff as directed.
  • Lift and carry at least 25 pounds.
  • Sit for extended periods of time in a vehicle or work setting.
