About The Position

The Boys Basketball: Freshman Coach is responsible for educating and inspiring student athletes to be the best version of themselves. This role is directly responsible to the Head Basketball Coach and the Director of Athletics. The coach must utilize sound educational principles and goals to ensure athletics are a worthwhile part of the overall school program. The position involves coaching individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in basketball, maintaining accurate records, and providing guidance and counseling to team members regarding academic eligibility, scholastic achievement, college entrance, and citizenship. The coach is also responsible for overseeing safety conditions of the facility, attending all practices and contests, enforcing discipline and sportsmanship, attending department meetings, staying informed of rule changes, and supporting school staff. Additionally, the coach will establish communication with adults to identify resources for enhancing athletics, supervise team members at contests, and assist with the distribution and collection of uniforms and equipment.

Requirements

Knowledge of basketball and its rules, and ability to instruct players in all facets of the sport.
Evidence of ability to get along with pupils, parents, colleagues, and other citizens.
CPR Certification

Nice To Haves

Previous basketball coaching experience is desirable.
Previous experience in either high school, college or both is desirable.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college preferred.
Completion of the MIAA Coaches Education Class and/or other requirements by the MIAA preferred

Responsibilities

Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
Maintain accurate records of team lists, injury reports, scores of games, stats (report to athletic office and newspapers as requested), incident reports, physical examinations.
Be available during the entire school year to lend assistance in guidance and counseling to his/her team members, i.e. scholastic achievement, college entrance, citizenship.
Responsible for determining the athlete’s academic eligibility.
Be responsible for information contained in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook and the EHS Student Handbook.
Oversees the safety conditions of the facility of the area in which the assigned sport is played at all times that students are present.
Be present at each practice session and at all contests of the sport coached.
Supervision of the weight room, locker room and shower areas until the area is secured before and after practices and contests and bus trips.
Enforce discipline and always encourage sportsmanship like behavior.
Attend all Athletic Department and EHS meetings that deal directly with the sport coached. Including MIAA, GBL, Coaches Associations and Athletic Awards meetings.
Stay informed of rule changes, trends, and recommendations that affect their sport.
Give personal support to the entire EHS staff, including school principal, school assistant principals and teachers.
Establish avenues of communication with other adults to identify potential resources for the enhancement of EHS athletics.
Directly supervise team members at home and away contests.
Assists in the distribution and collection of all uniforms and equipment.
Coaches are responsible for equipment not returned by his/her team members at the designated time.
Performs all other duties as the head coach and or athletic director may deem to be in the best interest of the sport, pupil, and school.
