About The Position

Working from blueprints, sketches, and oral or written instructions, this position sets up and operates a manual boring mill. This is a second shift position scheduled for four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, with a $3.00/hour shift differential provided. The role focuses on production quality and efficiency using appropriate tools and equipment, and is qualified to perform special processes as needed. The operator sets up and operates the machine for boring, turning, and facing castings, forgings, jigs, and fixtures. They may be required to improvise holding fixtures, set feeds, speeds, cut depth, and select tools, making allowances for metal characteristics, temperature effects, and shrinkage. In-process inspection using a variety of measuring tools and indicators is performed. The role requires the use of hand and power operated machine handling equipment due to the size, weight, and location of work, and consistently meets customer's quality requirements and expectations. The operator will supply several personal tools such as a square, scale, tape, hammer, and wrench. They must follow instructions, read blueprints and work instructions, and provide instruction and guidance to assisting employees, potentially participating in training of welders and other employees of lesser classification. Other duties as assigned by their supervisor are also part of the role. Safety and housekeeping are critical, involving potential use of scaffolds, ladders, forklifts, and scissor lifts, and possibly cranes to move parts. The work area must be maintained clean and free of clutter, with safety practiced at all times. Employees must follow safety policies and procedures, speak up when others are non-compliant, and wear all required safety equipment. Continuous improvement is encouraged through identifying, recommending, and implementing opportunities for improved quality and increased capacity, while maintaining an open mind to others' suggestions and bringing them to the appropriate team member. Requirements

High school GED Required
Trade school/BOCES in Machining Fundamentals
BOCES training or its equivalent in progressive Machine Shop assignments
Must be willing to work overtime as required.
Minimal travel may be required

Responsibilities

Can properly read all blueprint and work instructions.
Will provide instruction and guidance to employees assigned to assist and as required, will participate in training of welders and other employees of the department of lesser classification.
Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor, or his/her designate.
Work may require use of scaffold, ladders, forklift, and/or scissor lift.
Work may require the use of a crane to move part.
Maintains a clean work area with no clutter.
Practices safety at all times while at work.
