Boilermaker

SpaceX•Brownsville, TX

About The Position

SpaceX is hiring a Boilermaker for Starbase’s on-site power generation plant supporting the Starbase supercomputer. The role builds and installs plate, duct, and tank systems, including turbine exhaust duct, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) casings and stack shell, and aqueous ammonia tanks. Where steam-side equipment is included, the boilermaker installs heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) or steam-generator casing, modules, and pressure parts for package tie-in and testing. The position requires fitting, aligning, and welding equipment according to drawings, specifications, weld maps, and applicable welding procedure specifications (WPS). The boilermaker supports testing, crane lifts, coordination with other trades, safe work-area setup, and adherence to site safety and permit requirements. Work takes place outdoors in South Texas and may involve heights, confined spaces, heat, wind, rain, noise, and aqueous ammonia equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on boilermaker experience, completion of a recognized boilermaker apprenticeship, or equivalent military experience.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, overtime, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces inside duct, stacks, tanks, and casings.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods and perform climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in South Texas heat, wind, and rain, and around 19% aqueous ammonia SCR equipment.
  • Must wear required PPE, including fall-protection and confined-space gear, and respiratory protection when specified.
  • Must be able to work in adverse conditions such as dirty, noisy, hot, confined, or elevated environments.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Journey-level boilermaker card, NCCER Boilermaker credential, or equivalent credential.
  • Experience fitting and welding power-plant exhaust duct, SCR or stack plate, HRSG modules, or field-erected tanks.
  • Current ASME Section IX welder qualification in SMAW, FCAW, and/or GTAW on plate or tube.
  • Tube welding to a WPS, including mirror welding, backing purge, and preheat.
  • AWS D1.1 qualification for structural attachments where required by the weld map.
  • Qualified rigger and/or crane signalperson credential (NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent).
  • OSHA 10 or equivalent training and a current confined-space qualification.
  • Ability to read arrangement drawings, plate details, tank drawings, and weld maps.
  • Experience working around aqueous ammonia or other power-plant emissions equipment.
  • Strong safety mindset and willingness to follow fall-protection, confined-space, LOTO, and permit rules.

Responsibilities

  • Fit and weld turbine exhaust duct from the package outlet to the SCR, including spools, expansion joints, dampers, and turning vanes.
  • Assemble SCR housing, stack shell, liner plate, and casing; land sections on structural steel and bolt and weld them according to drawings and specifications.
  • Erect and weld aqueous ammonia storage tanks and other field-erected or shop tanks; fit nozzles for pipefitter tie-ins.
  • When HRSG or steam-generator parts are on the job, install casing, modules, headers, and tubes; align and weld pressure parts according to the weld map and WPS.
  • Lay out, cut, bevel, and fit plate; set gaps, hi-lo, and alignment before weld-out, including purge and preheat when required by the WPS.
  • Support hydrostatic and pneumatic testing of tanks, duct, and pressure parts by installing blinds and test packs, inspecting seams, and repairing weld leaks.
  • Rig and signal crane picks of duct, casing, stack cans, tank courses, and modules, keeping each pick within the lift plan.
  • Read arrangement, plate, tank, and weld-map drawings; flag conflicts with steel, piping, and equipment before sections are landed.
  • Coordinate with millwrights at the turbine exhaust flange, ironworkers on supports and stack steel, and pipefitters at nozzles and tie-ins.
  • Stage plate, welding consumables, and tools; keep laydown yards and work fronts orderly.
  • Open and close work areas, including confined-space setups; provide protection, remove debris, segregate scrap, and reset work areas at shift end.
  • Follow fall-protection, confined-space, LOTO, PPE, and permit rules; do not work under suspended loads or on live systems without authorization.
  • Immediately report damaged plate, poor fit-up, unsafe conditions, and drawing conflicts.
