About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated and experienced Boiler Technician to oversee our vital heating and cooling infrastructure. In this role, you would be responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of multiple hydronic and steam systems. You will serve as the primary subject matter expert for boiler and HVAC operations across five prison facilities, ensuring optimal functionality and safety at all times. Furthermore, you will step into a supervisory role and directly supervise, support, and guide the facility’s HVAC and plumbing staff.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and tools in the operation, calibration, adjustment, maintenance, and installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of the theory and principles of refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, electrical, fluid flow, boiler, and heating system operations.
  • Knowledge of microcomputer-operated environmental control systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree (typically in Management)
  • 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in HVAC) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior HVAC Specialist
  • EPA License OR 3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in HVAC) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Senior HVAC Specialist
  • EPA License

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of progressive work experience in the HVAC field with the specific knowledge and experience of working on boiler systems
  • Prior supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.
  • Planning, coordinating, delegating, and reviewing work assignments and productivity.
  • Assessing technical skills on a continual basis and suggesting training programs to alleviate deficiencies and enhance knowledge of HVAC/R system developments.
  • Giving assistance and technical support to crew members in the performance of their duties.
  • Performing preventive and predictive maintenance, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of HVAC/R systems, equipment, and environmental controls, including air handlers, boilers, and chillers.
  • Retrofitting outdated equipment to take advantage of new technologies.
  • Interacting with agency personnel and vendors to facilitate improved system performance and service.
  • Ensuring systems meet or exceed program requirements and comply with existing building, health, and safety codes and standards.
  • Working with energy management programming to achieve the most cost-effective and energy-efficient operation of building HVAC/R equipment.
  • Making adjustments and programming changes as seasonal demands and changes in occupied space utilization occur.
  • Planning, directing, assisting, supervising, and inspecting the work of HVAC and plumbing staff as well as skilled and non-skilled inmate workers, including training inmate work crews on the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Reviewing data and maintaining records through the AIM maintenance management software.
  • Ordering parts and materials and ensuring supplies are on hand for daily operations, and following proper procurement protocols.
  • Ensuring all tools, keys, and chemicals are accounted for daily.
  • Working with and escorting vendors and contractors to complete various tasks and assignments.
  • Working on-call on a rotating basis to include occasional night and weekend hours.
  • Ensuring adherence to all WDOC policies and procedures.
