About The Position

The Boathouse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the boathouse, ensuring the safety of all student-athletes, coaching and support staff, maintaining equipment and supporting the success of the Women’s Rowing team. The Boathouse Manager will work closely with the Facilities and Events staff and perform light custodial work and maintenance. The position is responsible for the repair, maintenance, inventory, and rigging of all rowing related equipment, including but not limited to, shells, oars, coxswain equipment, rowing ergometers, coaching launches and motors, and trailers. The position is also responsible for racecourse installation and upkeep and transporting boats and equipment to all competitions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • High comfort level with lakes and rivers
  • Previous experience with boathouse management, facilities maintenance, or a similar role
  • Knowledge of and experience with trailer towing
  • Basic knowledge of inventory control, specifically expense tracking
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and solutions focused approach to challenges and improvements
  • Ability to work well both independently and in collaboration with staff, external community groups, and vendors as a collective team member
  • Excellent time management ability, detail oriented with strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills
  • Valid state issued driver’s license
  • Must maintain flexibility to work overtime, occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays for repairs, and travel for multiple days as needed for competition and training

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Knowledge of boating laws, regulations and safety
  • Experience with fiberglass/carbon fiber repairs
  • Ability to perform various duties related to carpentry, mechanical repair, and detail painting
  • Prior rowing experience

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the boathouse, including opening and closing procedures, ensuring the boathouse, dock, and rowing course setup are open and ready for practices and properly secured after practices and training
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures
  • Install all assigned racecourses. This involves course set-up and tear down related to any practices or race competitions on the Kansas River at Burcham Park and Wyandotte County Lake venues
  • Ensure the boathouse is clean, organized, and well-maintained. This involves coordinating the maintenance, security, and custodial needs of the Boathouse and grounds, working closely with assigned Facilities staff
  • Inspect and maintain boats, equipment, and facilities. Rig boats and oars ensuring all boats, oars and equipment are in race ready condition. Complete minor repairs and maintain the dock and rowing site. Coordinate major repairs and maintenance as needed. This includes the repair, maintenance, and care for all rowing related equipment including but not limited to shells, oars, coxswain equipment, rowing ergometers, coaching launches and motors, and truck and trailers, and which includes fiberglass repair, detail painting, electrical wiring and small motor repair
  • Develop and maintain an off-season maintenance program including but not limited to an equipment replacement and maintenance strategy and including the cleaning of all parts of the boats and repair and replacement of parts
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate inventory of all rowing related equipment and order parts and equipment as approved by the Head Coach
  • Assist with managing the budget and tracking expenses. Initiate the purchasing process with domestic and international boat manufacturers to prepare purchase order requests
  • Monitor and assist with part-time student employees and provide feedback, training, and coaching as needed
  • Transport equipment, including racing hulls, to training sites, competitions and to or from the manufacturer
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of river flows, water levels, safety recommendations, and inform assigned Facilities staff as appropriate
  • This position’s responsibilities may also include providing administrative assistance with home regattas, team travel, assisting with the recruitment of perspective student-athletes, assisting with organizing and conducting instructional clinics and summer camps
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, Rowing Head Coach, or their designee
