About The Position

At Haig Point Club & Community, our marine operation is an essential part of the member experience. As a Boat Mate, you will play an important role in safely and comfortably transporting our members, guests, and cargo while delivering the warm, personal service that defines Haig Point. This is a unique opportunity for an individual who enjoys being on the water, takes pride in safety and professionalism, and wants to grow their skills as a professional mariner. Working alongside experienced Captains and the Marine Operations team, you will gain valuable hands-on experience while contributing to an exceptional island community. The Boat Mate assists the vessel Captain with the safe and efficient daily operation of Haig Point vessels. This position combines maritime operations, safety, vessel care, and exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-minded, attentive to detail, comfortable working outdoors, and genuinely enjoys serving people. A willingness to learn, develop seamanship skills, and take on additional responsibilities is essential.

Requirements

  • Minimum 180 days of documented sea service.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Basic seamanship knowledge and a genuine interest in developing professional maritime skills.
  • Basic knowledge of marine safety and emergency procedures.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Must be TWIC eligible.
  • Ability to read, understand, and communicate effectively in English as required for safe vessel operations and customer service.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, follow established procedures, and complete assigned tasks reliably.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Positive attitude, dependability, and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize the safety of passengers, crew, vessels, and cargo at all times.
  • Assist the Captain with the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
  • Follow all Ferry Company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with particular emphasis on safety.
  • Perform passenger boarding and disembarkation duties in a safe and professional manner.
  • Load, secure, transport, and unload cargo as directed.
  • Maintain accurate ship's logs, passenger manifests, engineering logs, and other required records.
  • Perform routine engine-room checks and assist with light vessel maintenance.
  • Maintain awareness of changing weather, water, dock, and operating conditions.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and assist the captain and crew as needed.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and personal service to Haig Point members and guests.
  • Create a welcoming and comfortable experience from boarding through arrival.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with members, guests, coworkers, and leadership.
  • Demonstrate patience, professionalism, and a positive attitude in all interactions.
  • Represent Haig Point with pride and consistently uphold the organization's service standards.
  • Maintain vessel cleanliness and presentation according to Ferry Company standards.
  • Assist with routine vessel inspections and housekeeping.
  • Work collaboratively with Captains and other Marine Operations team members.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability as schedules, weather conditions, and operational needs change.
  • Take initiative in learning new skills and advancing maritime knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe and successful Marine Operations.
