Under the direction of the vessel captain, and assistant captain as applicable, supervises an assigned crew of deckhands and matrons on a municipal ferry vessel; performs related work. This role ensures crew compliance with operating procedures, laws, and regulations, and oversees the safe embarking/disembarking of passengers and loading/unloading of vehicles. The Mate also assigns deckhands to stations, instructs them in seamanship and safety procedures, and serves as deck officer in charge during emergencies and drills. Responsibilities include acting as helmsman, radar observer, and member of the navigational watch, ensuring the vessel's property is cared for, maintaining cleanliness, and preparing reports. The position requires maintaining a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate, a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), and adhering to US Coast Guard medical guidelines and drug testing policies.
