About The Position

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) is seeking one candidate to fill a member-at-large vacancy on its Board of Directors, specifically in the area of finance. This is a volunteer position. The CCSA Board of Directors is composed of 13 members, with some appointed by the Governor in Council and others selected by the Board itself. Members-at-large are recruited from various sectors and represent diverse geographic areas, interests, experience, and expertise. Board members-at-large typically serve a three-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for up to two more terms. The Board meets for two days, three to four times a year in Ottawa, virtually, or in another Canadian city. Each board member is expected to serve on at least one committee, which usually meets before Board meetings.

Requirements

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant designation (required)
  • Financial management expertise (required)
  • Governance expertise through having served on one or more boards of directors (required)
  • Understanding of not-for-profit governance structures
  • Strong leadership, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Passion for the organization’s mission and alignment with its values
  • Strong ethical judgment and confidentiality awareness
  • Knowledgeable about the field of substance use and addictions or has insight into the issues and challenges related to substance use and addictions in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Executive leadership experience working in Government (Federal, provincial, territorial) or in the addictions/mental health field (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Act honestly and in good faith with a view to the best interests of the organization.
  • Exercise the care, diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances.
  • Avoid potential, perceived, or actual conflicts of interest.
  • Keep information that has not been publicly disclosed confidential, including Board discussions.
  • Comply with the CCSA By-laws, corporate governance policies, and Board policies.
  • Attend and be prepared for all Board meetings.
  • Participate in at least one Board committee.
  • Be available as a resource for the organization.
  • Serve as an ambassador for CCSA.
  • Contribute to discussions and provide insight on CCSA’s current and future business interests, as well as issues impacting CCSA’s strategic direction.
  • Positively contribute to the Board's journey of truth and reconciliation.
