The Urban Flood Safety and Water Quality District is seeking engaged, community-minded volunteers to serve on its Bond Accountability Committee. Committee members help oversee how public funds are spent on projects that protect neighborhoods from flooding across the region. The District is especially interested in a diverse group of residents who care about flood safety and disaster resilience; the environment, clean water, and green infrastructure; and government accountability and community equity. Committee membership will reflect a combination of experience in capital project design, construction, capital program management, construction financing, planning, budgeting, auditing, environmental sustainability, climate-resilient infrastructure, cultural history and equity, and public contracting. The committee monitors and reports on bond program progress and makes recommendations to the District Board. Members attend four meetings per year: three at the District office and one involving visits to project sites around the District. Meeting times will be coordinated with committee members. Members are also expected to thoroughly review materials before each meeting. Terms are three years, and the position is uncompensated. The District’s mission is to equitably reduce flood risk and prepare for and respond to flood emergencies by maintaining levees, conveying water when necessary, and finding innovative and nature-based ways to live with more water. Its work supports community safety and the region’s economic vitality, contributes to river and watershed health, plans for a more climate-resilient future, and promotes equity. The District manages the flood safety system in northern Multnomah County, which reduces flood risk for residents, businesses, natural habitat, and critical services including Portland International Airport and the region’s secondary drinking-water supply.
