About The Position

The Journal of Applied Ecology and Ecological Solutions and Evidence are seeking two new Blog Editors to help run its highly successful blog site, The Applied Ecologist. This is a voluntary position with an initial term of 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years. The role is remote and can be based anywhere in the world. The Applied Ecologist blog receives approximately 70,000 page views per year and shares topical research from applied ecology, serving as a platform for the community and authors to communicate their work to a wider audience. It also discusses trends and topics of interest to ecologists in research and practical environmental management. The Blog Editor will be part of the journal’s Editorial Board and will work with the journals’ Editorial Offices to identify, commission, and deliver scientifically robust, high-quality content. The British Ecological Society, founded in 1904, has over 8000 members worldwide and publishes seven journals, science guides, and a membership magazine. They value diversity and the perspectives different backgrounds bring.

Requirements

• PhD in ecology or equivalent
• Excellent written English
• Effective and clear communication
• Keen eye for detail
• Good organisational and project management skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to network and a willingness to use this when working on topical blog posts
• Ability to identify gaps in current content and devise new initiatives
• Tenacity and self-motivation

Nice To Haves

• Experience of contributing to a scientific blog or similar
• Experience with social media
• Experience with podcasting and video editing

Responsibilities

• Commission or write 2-3 blog posts per month, including posts by authors on their recently published articles, blog series (e.g., ‘Field Diaries’, ‘Restoring Landscapes’), and broader pieces on trends or debates in the field or community-focused pieces.
• Proofread and edit draft posts to ensure they meet quality requirements and fit the style and tone of the blog, with guidance from the journal’s Assistant Editor.
• Assist with copy-editing and publishing of research summaries on an ad-hoc basis.
• Participate in a monthly online meeting to discuss upcoming plans and develop new ideas for the blog.
• Provide copy for promoting blog posts on social media accounts and actively help promote social media posts.
• Promote the journal and blog when attending relevant conferences, meetings, workshops, etc., with provided materials.
