About The Position

The Transmitter, an initiative of the Simons Foundation, is seeking an experienced science journalist to join its newsroom in New York City as a News Editor. This role focuses on shaping and editing news, high-impact scoops, and accountability stories within the field of neuroscience, with a particular emphasis on basic neuroscience research. The News Editor will report to the Managing Editor and work with staff reporters and freelancers to develop, assign, and edit a variety of content. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing award-caliber work and a strong interest or background in basic neuroscience research. The position is full-time and based in New York City.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a scientific discipline (neuroscience preferred).
  • At least five years of news editing experience.
  • Ability to edit articles on complex scientific topics accurately for a specialist audience.
  • Passionate about The Transmitter’s coverage area of basic neuroscience research.
  • Exceptional communication and grammar skills (written and verbal).
  • Collegiality in working with staff and freelance reporters and editors.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Familiarity with and adherence to journalistic ethics.
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately under tight deadlines.
  • Affinity for trade journalism and The Transmitter’s mission.
  • Keen sense of news.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines and juggle multiple assignments.
  • Social media skills.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in science and/or journalism preferred.
  • Familiarity with science policy.

Responsibilities

  • Work with staff reporters and freelancers to develop strong pitches for news, in-depth enterprise stories, profiles, and accountability pieces.
  • Assign and edit articles.
  • Help select and manage interns and recruit new freelance reporters.
  • Oversee the copyediting and fact-checking process for stories.
  • Ensure diversity in coverage and sourcing.
  • Collaborate with the art director to develop compelling visuals and data-rich graphics.
  • Contribute to editorial planning meetings, shaping coverage priorities and story mix.
  • Perform other writing and editing duties as assigned.
