About The Position

This role oversees the safe use of explosives in mining and construction. The Blasting and Explosives Inspector for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plays an important part in keeping blasting assignments safe. This role involves collaboration with various groups to review permits, investigate concerns, and oversee compliance. It offers an opportunity to make a positive difference by supporting responsible mining and construction practices, and to learn, lead, and contribute to the safety of the Commonwealth.

Requirements

• Four years of experience in the handling and use of explosives, including a minimum of two years as a lead blaster, blasting foreman or blasting operations supervisor; OR A bachelor's degree in engineering or physical sciences.
• Possession of a Class A "General" blaster's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
• Possession of a valid Pennsylvania commercial driver's license with hazardous materials (H) endorsement.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.

• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Responsibilities

• Examine permit applications, draft letters, enter data, and verify compliance with regulations.
• Inspect surface sites to regulate explosive storage, sales, and use.
• Survey structures, analyze blasting energy levels, and determine probable causes of damage.
• Support training courses and provide guidance to explosives users on safe practices.
• Issue orders, complete investigations, and represent the department at hearings.
• Meet with citizens and explosives users to explain regulations and address concerns.
