Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. The Blaster is an entry-level role responsible for blasting, cleaning, and preparing tank car interiors by removing debris, grit, weld spatter, and surface imperfections. The role involves grinding, vacuuming, and applying protective materials to ensure surfaces meet quality standards. The incumbent also maintains equipment and supports a clean, safe work environment while adhering to strict safety and quality requirements in a physically demanding industrial setting. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and other work-related documentation
  • Strong focus on safety and quality.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, in accordance with the union contract
  • Dependable and reliable attendance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.
  • Rail industry experience
  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Responsibilities

  • Utilize a safety-approved air gun to remove grit and dust following blasting operations; remove protective coverings, clean trucks and components, and inspect railcars for damage
  • Grind and remove weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges from tank and hopper car interiors; level girth welds on floors as required
  • Thoroughly vacuum tank car interiors and apply foil and tape to stainless steel surfaces as specified
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition and ensure adequate supply levels
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe, and promptly report any potential hazards
