STAT is seeking a high-caliber reporter to cover the biotechnology industry as part of its team reporting on the life sciences. The role combines breaking news and quick-turn analysis with deeply reported enterprise, including company and trend stories, profiles of executives and scientists, and narrative journalism. The reporter may also contribute to STAT platforms such as its biotech podcast, The Readout Loud, and participate in events and summits around the country. The reporter’s specific focus will depend on the candidate’s interests and STAT’s needs; interest in biotech startups and venture capital is a plus. STAT is a national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences, producing daily news, investigations, narrative projects, multimedia features, podcasts, and opinion pieces. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but operates independently from The Boston Globe. The role may be based anywhere in the United States. STAT’s office is in downtown Boston, and some colleagues regularly work from the office while others are based in cities throughout the country. This is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild. The annual salary range is $74,911–$120,000. Compensation will reflect the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and qualifications; most qualified candidates are anticipated to be hired within the midpoint of the range. Applicants should submit a cover letter addressed to Managing Editor Jason Ukman, a resume, and links to up to five reporting clips. Links should appear at the end of the cover letter, and PDFs should be provided for work behind a paywall. Applicants may also note their pronouns in their resume or cover letter.
