About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) seeks a doctoral-level Biostatistician (Research Scientist, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor), non-tenure-track. to serve as a faculty member within the Translational Research Center. This position will play a critical role in advancing the institution’s clinical, translational, and medical education research mission by providing expertise in study design, statistical analysis, and research methodology, while contributing to the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and faculty investigators. The successful candidate will integrate biostatistical rigor into clinical, translational, and medical education research initiatives, support student scholarship, and contribute to the delivery and continuous improvement of the biostatistics curriculum within the MD program.

Requirements

  • PhD, DrPH in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, or closely related field OR Master’s trained with relevant experience working with a medical school.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical methods relevant to clinical, translational or medical education research
  • Experience in collaborative research environments supporting clinicians in developing research projects
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain statistical concepts to non-experts

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching biostatistics or epidemiology to medical or health professions students
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Stata, or equivalent)
  • Track record of collaborative research
  • Experience mentoring trainees in academic medicine
  • Familiarity with clinical data environments (e.g., EHR-derived datasets, OMOP, or similar)

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, delivery, and evaluation of biostatistics instruction within the MD curriculum, including pre-clerkship and clerkship phases
  • Participate in the Evidence and Systems-Based Practice (ESP) or equivalent curriculum thread
  • Develop teaching materials, case-based learning modules, and applied statistical exercises
  • Support integration of biostatistics into clinically relevant learning activities and assessments
  • Evaluate student performance and contribute to curriculum improvement efforts
  • Provide biostatistical expertise for clinical, translational and medical education research projects across department
  • Collaborate with clinical faculty to: Design research protocols, Develop statistical analysis plans, Interpret findings for publication and presentation
  • Serve as a core resource for: Study design and methodology consultation, Data analysis and statistical modeling
  • Facilitate manuscript and grant preparation
  • Partner with the Translational Research Center and affiliated research infrastructure to support investigator-initiated and sponsored studies
  • Collaborate with faculty on educational research and participate in journal clubs to support faculty professional development
  • Mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in research design and statistical analysis
  • Develop a longitudinal experience in incorporating evidence-based medicine for medical students throughout the clerkships
  • Support student scholarly concentrations, research projects, and capstone experiences
  • Provide guidance on: Data analysis workflows, Statistical interpretation, Research dissemination (abstracts, posters, manuscripts)
  • Contribute to development of a sustainable research mentorship ecosystem
  • Maintain an active program of scholarly activity in biostatistics, clinical research, or related areas
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and external grant applications
  • Participate as a co-investigator or methodological expert on funded research projects
  • Present findings at regional and national scientific meetings
  • Participate in academic and administrative committees related to research and education
  • Contribute to development of institutional research infrastructure and strategy
  • Support compliance with IRB, regulatory, and research governance processes
  • Engage in collaborative initiatives with Renown Health and other partner organizations
