About The Position

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Co-Op position for Biomaterials R&D within DePuy Synthes, their orthopedic medical device company. DePuy Synthes develops and markets implants and instruments for orthopedic trauma and reconstructive surgery. The Co-Op will be part of the Biomaterials Research and Development group, focusing on developing implants using new materials technologies such as polymers, ceramics, composites, and drug-device combination products. The role involves working in cross-functional teams, assisting scientists and engineers in R&D laboratories with fabricating device prototypes, and conducting mechanical, chemical, biological, and simulated use testing to evaluate device performance. The position requires working in a Biosafety Level 2 lab. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) located in West Chester, PA, with less than 5% travel.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate engineering or science program.
  • Interest in chemistry, biology, materials science, or medical device development.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Observant and able to think creatively.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.
  • Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments and provide data, results analysis, and reports to project teams in a timeline driven process.
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of R&D laboratories.
  • Exercise technical judgment in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments.
  • Use professional concepts to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
  • Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documentation according to required guidelines.
  • Provide other project or product support as needed to support Synthes’ business objectives.
