Biomanufacturing and Chemical Separations Engineer, Lead

Booz Allen Hamilton•Edgewood, MD
•$77,600 - $176,000

About The Position

Booz Allen is seeking a highly experienced, strategic, hands-on Biomanufacturing and Chemical Separations Engineer to bring a new, fully built and equipped pilot-scale facility online and oversee a team conducting large-volume downstream engineering runs. The engineer will work in a client research and pilot-scale facility to develop and optimize downstream processes for recovering and purifying microbially produced molecules and metabolites. The role includes evaluating current product-isolation methods for scale-up feasibility and executing processes at pilot scale. The engineer will connect technical teams with external stakeholders and commercial transition partners, helping ensure the facility meets performance metrics and processes can be transferred efficiently to commercial scale. The role also applies process-improvement frameworks to deliver consistent quantitative or qualitative results. Applicants must be able to obtain a Secret clearance and meet the stated education and experience requirements. Selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Requirements

  • Experience operating in hazardous locations.
  • Experience organizing, storing, retrieving, compiling, and analyzing data in response to detailed information requests.
  • Experience developing and implementing analytical chemistry methods, including HPLC, GC/MS, or NMR.
  • Experience with pilot-scale or larger chemical processing techniques such as distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, centrifugation, ultrafiltration, chromatography, and downstream unit operations.
  • Experience evaluating bench-scale processes for scale-up feasibility, including operational safety, unit-operation efficiency, and economic viability in industrial fermentation, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or biomanufacturing operations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams to collaborate and prepare technical reports.
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards and regulations such as NFPA, ASTM, and ANSI.
  • Ability to build trust and value-based relationships with team members and stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to lead a team in designing, planning, and executing pilot-scale experiments and chemical separations processes.
  • Ability to be creative and innovative with an improvement- and process-based mindset.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance.
  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry and 8 or more years of experience in biomanufacturing or process development for downstream processing and chemical separations; or a doctorate and 6 or more years of such experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with bioindustrial manufacturing, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, or biotechnology companies.
  • Experience with Department of Defense or Army procedures, proposal writing, or reporting requirements.
  • Experience using AI tools for data analysis, automation, or documentation to improve workflow and process reproducibility.
  • Ability to translate and document business needs, processes, and procedures into detailed user stories, process charts, workflows, and standard operating procedures.
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related science field.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and operate a new pilot-scale biomanufacturing and chemical separations facility.
  • Bring the facility’s processes online and oversee a high-performing team.
  • Design, plan, and execute large-volume downstream engineering runs and pilot-scale experiments.
  • Develop and optimize downstream processes for recovery and purification of microbially produced molecules and metabolites.
  • Analyze product-isolation methods and assess their feasibility for scale-up, including operational safety, unit-operation efficiency, and economic viability.
  • Execute downstream processes and chemical separations at pilot scale.
  • Serve as a primary bridge between technical teams, external stakeholders, and commercial transition partners.
  • Help ensure the facility meets performance metrics and processes are designed for efficient technology transfer to commercial scale.
  • Apply process-improvement frameworks to deliver consistent quantitative or qualitative results.
