Biology Technician
About The Position
This Biology Technician role involves preparing tissue and sectioning material for the manufacture of educational slides as assigned by the team supervisor. Performance will be assessed based upon both the quality of the finished slide and the efficiency of slide making. The role requires a science degree and experience in slide making is a plus. The ideal candidate must be well-organized, capable of handling multiple projects, and be an effective team player. Essential knowledge includes normal/optimal specimen structure and quality for assessing acceptability, general lab procedures including staining for troubleshooting, problem-solving skills, general laboratory safety and hazardous chemicals awareness, the ability to independently plan and organize time to meet production goals, and the ability to follow multi-step procedures accurately. A high level of motor skill, manual dexterity, and patience is crucial for manipulating small and delicate tissues. Basic computer skills including word processing and familiarity with Windows 98 and 2000 are necessary. Customer service abilities such as friendliness, a positive attitude, and phone etiquette are also important.

Responsibilities
- Preparing tissue and sectioning material for the manufacture of educational slides.
- Controlling microtome and other technical equipment.
- Checking section quality throughout the process and adjusting as necessary.
- Affixing specimens to glass, ensuring technical criteria of placement and orientation are met.
- Staining specimens, following and adjusting all steps to achieve technical criteria for displaying critical structures for teaching.
- Permanently mounting specimens without introducing air.
- Investigating and determining how to solve problems in production or quality.
- Collaborating with expeditor and Sr. Techs to satisfy acute customer needs.
- Planning ways and deciding how to satisfy production/quality goals.
- Investigating and interpreting specimen structure and quality (Trial specimens), determining plane of section, suitability for teaching biology, and specific usage.
- Maintaining order and supplies in personal lab space.
- Participating in recycling programs and maintenance of shared equipment.
