About The Position

Salem Academy and College is seeking a Biology Adjunct Instructor to teach the lecture portion of Principles of Biology, an introductory course for non-majors. This role involves preparing and delivering in-person learning activities, developing course materials (syllabus, homework, CMS content) in consultation with the Biology Laboratory Coordinator, evaluating student work, and holding office hours. The instructor will also be responsible for maintaining student records, managing course materials on the Salem College CMS, communicating with students and the coordinator via Salem email, and participating in faculty meetings. Salem College is dedicated to educating women and is the nation's only liberal arts college focused on developing health leaders.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Biology or related discipline with at least 18 graduate-level course hours in a biological science
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written and interpersonal) and organizational skills
  • Sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of the community

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience teaching classes in Biology at the undergraduate or graduate level as instructor of record
  • Experience in instructional technology
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Teaches the lecture portion of a course in the Biology program
  • Prepares and delivers in-person learning activities in order to achieve course outcomes
  • In consultation with the Biology Laboratory Coordinator, prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and material for Course Management System (CMS)
  • Evaluates and grades students’ class work, online work, assignments, and examinations
  • Holds a minimum of two regularly-scheduled office hours per week of classes throughout the semester
  • Maintains and submits student attendance records, grades and other required documentation by specified deadlines
  • Prepares and maintains course material on the Salem College CMS
  • Communicates with enrolled students and the Laboratory Coordinator through the use of a Salem email account
  • Participates in periodic meetings with one or more members of the Biology program faculty
