About The Position

This person conducts genomics-based research on various at-risk insect taxa. Works closely with Jaret Daniels and his lab members and collaborators to achieve goals of research projects, especially those funded by external grants. Of particular importance is research to help address key information gaps, provide accurate taxonomic delimitation, screen for disease, conduct genome assembly and annotation, assess population structure, connectivity and health, direct ex situ initiatives, inform conservation and recovery actions, and statistical planning, design, and analysis. This person prepares publications, proposals, and reports. This person coordinates research with collaborators, analyzes and interprets data from conducted research, writes manuscripts and reports, and submits manuscript to peer-reviewed journals. This person writes or assists with the writing of funding proposals that are submitted to funding agencies, foundations and/or donors. The resulting grants and funds are used for research and travel. This person mentors undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs; supports visiting collaborators in laboratory work and data analysis. The mentorship includes organizing regular meetings, providing direction and assistance to students during research work, writing research proposals and manuscripts with students, and helping the students to present the results at conferences. This person communicates regularly and organizes meetings with collaborators. This person attends professional conferences, workshops, departmental seminars, professional development opportunities, and helps develop and maintain research networks. This person responds to emails and communicates with other lab members. This person participates in Daniels Lab and Museum- associated public outreach and helps translate science to a broader audience as available.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience.
Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.
Must be able to work closely with various people, including PI, staff, students, postdocs, collaborators, and vendors.

Nice To Haves

Ph.D. in relevant field of Biology
Postdoctoral research genomics and population genetics.
Highly organized with strong attention to detail, including maintaining clean and safe laboratory conditions.
More than two years of experience coordinating broad research activities in a molecular laboratory.
Experience with mentoring and/or overseeing students.
Familiarity with DNA extraction, library preparation, and Nextgen Sequencing.
Experience in genomics and genome assembly and annotation.
Experience in conducting analyses using High-Performance Computing.
