About The Position

At Saltwater Inc., we are seeking a Biological Sampling Support contractor to work with NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD). The FSD is responsible for ensuring data quality through compilation, quality control, and assurance. This role involves organizing, maintaining, and developing databases, performing data analyses and extractions to support stock assessments and reporting, and developing electronic reporting systems. This is a full-time, onsite position at the Miami Lab of the SEFSC, with a one-year base contract period and potential for three option periods. This is a proactive recruitment, and the position will be available if the work is awarded.

Requirements

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study or BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of fish or related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
  • Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.
  • Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial fishermen.
  • Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish.
  • Skill in use of Android mobile device applications for field collections of environmental data.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in bio sampling operations to understand Trip Interview Program (TIP) sampling operations, protocols, and logistical issues.
  • Periodically accompany Federal and Partner TIP samplers to field sites to observe operations and assist in collecting lengths, weights, and biological samples (primarily otoliths) from commercial fisheries catches.
  • Produce a brief report of each trip.
  • Use standard database software (Excel, Access) and advanced software (SQL Developer, SAS) to query TIP and associated data for inconsistencies, monitor incoming data for standardization, and produce reports for the Branch Chief.
  • Conduct data extractions to support various analytical work by SEFSC staff.
  • Use the QA/QC reporting system in the TIPS web portal to produce a quarterly report detailing SEFSC TIP sampler adherence to established protocols, including a summary page of common issues.
  • Meet biannually with Contractor Dockside Samplers to discuss QA/QC report results.
  • Update and improve the SAS code underlying the QA/QC reporting tool, including testing with application developers.
  • Use SQL Developer to review historical TIP data to answer user questions and respond to custom data requests.
  • Assist in leading research, development, implementation, and enhancement of electronic data collection systems used in the TIP program.
  • Work with technology vendors to research and implement viable electronic data collection methods or improvements to existing systems.
  • Develop training materials, technical manuals, and curricula to advance the use of electronic systems in dockside sampling.
  • Provide training and support for TIP samplers to maintain operations of electronic technologies.
  • Participate in SEFSC-sponsored or participating outreach events (e.g., Open Houses, Youth/Career Fairs) to explain port sampling goals and methods, especially electronic technologies.
  • Attend training sessions or conferences (in person or via webinar/conference call) to acquire updates to sampling protocols and technology.
