About The Position

This position serves in a leadership role in the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring program of FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, leading the Charlotte Harbor Field Laboratory. The Fisheries-Independent Monitoring (FIM) program collects abundance data on fish and invertebrates in Florida’s riverine, estuarine, and coastal reef habitats. It is FIM’s mission to provide timely and valuable data for use in the management and conservation of Florida’s diverse fishery resources. This position conducts all aspects of the FIM program with emphasis on directing and executing statistically valid research experiments and surveys in estuarine and marine waters on various sized boats to evaluate relative fish stock abundance, age composition, movement, growth, and health.

Requirements

  • 8 years professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory program, one of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of professional supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory practices
  • Knowledge in using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Pro
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques for assessing single and multi-species processes
  • Knowledge of sampling designs, methods and gears used for collection of fisheries-independent data
  • Knowledge of fisheries biology and ecology
  • Knowledge of young-of-year, subadult and adult fish and invertebrate identification using dichotomous keys
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to lead a team of scientists
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities under arduous conditions (e.g., inclement weather, rough water, shoreline wading)
  • Skill to collect and summarize complex fisheries data from various relational databases and outside sources
  • Skill to use various software packages to write code to manipulate or analyze data
  • Skill to develop and design fisheries research studies
  • Skill to maintain a valid Florida driver’s license
  • Skill to complete a small boat safety course

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating and conducting fisheries-independent sampling
  • Supervising personnel
  • Overseeing timely and accurate completion of administrative issues associated with the field lab
  • Statistically analyzing associated fisheries data
  • Assisting with QA/QC protocols
  • Writing and presenting scientific reports and/or manuscripts
  • Assisting with the design and evaluation of sampling gear
  • Preparing/reviewing proposals for continued and new surveys
  • Participating in the editorial review of scientific manuscripts
  • Developing and managing budgets
  • Adhering to purchasing rules and policies
  • Managing the building
  • Recruitment, training, work planning, and performance management
  • Coordinating activities with other FWC/FWRI scientists, outside investigators, and agencies to accomplish research relevant to the FWC mission
  • Representing FWRI at meetings and conferences related to above job duties
  • Collaborating with all programs at the field lab
  • Participating in public outreach efforts, as appropriate
  • Assisting with other Institute programs as required
