About The Position

The Canadian Center for Computational Genomics (C3G) is a bioinformatics core facility that offers bioinformatics services supporting the McGill Genome Centre and the wider genomics community. Within C3G, the Technological Development team’s main objective is to test new technologies and develop the analytical workflows required to support them. This includes development of our internal workflow management system GenPipes, as well as supporting external software tools from the wider bioinformatics community. Projects currently or previously supported by the team include Genome Canada’s HostSeq and VirusSeq initiatives, the Terry Fox Research Institute’s Marathon of Hope (MoH) Initiative, the Pan Canadian Genomic Library (PCGL), as well as the upcoming Canadian Precision Health Initiative (CPHI). The Bioinformatics Analyst position corresponds to junior members of the team with expertise in large-scale genomic analyses, software development using R and Python, and High-Performance and Cloud computing. This position will provide an opportunity to focus on workflow development for long-read, pan-genome and graph genome approaches, as part of C3G’s efforts to continue innovating and incorporating new services as a bioinformatics core facility.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in the field of genomics or bioinformatics and 3 years related experience
  • Extensive experience programming in R, Python and Bash
  • Experience using High-Performance Computing environments
  • Bilingual English/French, spoken and written.
  • Knowledge of English: Level #4 on a scale of 0-4.

Nice To Haves

  • Use and develop analysis pipelines using in-house and third party tools or algorithms, and incorporate them into specialized analysis workflows, with a focus on long-reads, pan-genome and graph genome approaches.
  • Develop bioinformatics solutions for the analysis of complex genomic datasets, including long-reads sequencing and novel approaches such as graph genomes and multi-genome references.
  • Contribute to the development of GenPipes our open-source workflow management solution, focusing on the development of new workflows and deployment to cloud infrastructure in an effort to expand our services as a bioinformatics core facility.
  • Update, test, and extend bioinformatics tools and software methods used or developed at the C3G.
  • Actively contribute to the Technical Development group efforts to create Standard Operating Procedures and perform on-demand analyses.
  • Provide detailed reports with analysis results and descriptions of methods used.
  • Contribute to problem-solving discussions.
  • Provide regular internal reports regarding the progress of projects (oral presentations).
  • Stay informed of the most relevant bioinformatics practices in genomics, specifically in the context of long-reads and multi-genome references.
  • Lecture in bioinformatics training workshops organized by the center.
